T

he NFL offseason is raging on, with all 32 teams hard at work on building a winning roster ahead of the 2026 season. For most teams, the goal of the offseason is to maintain the standard set from the prior campaign while for others, finding success is at the forefront of their mind. Regardless of what the situation is, each and every offseason provides unique and jaw dropping stories that become the talk of the town.

For the San Francisco 49ers, a promising 12-5 season came to a crashing halt in the NFC divisional playoffs, losing 41-6 to the eventual Super Bowl champion, Seattle Seahawks. Devastated by a rash of injuries to several key stars, the 49ers were never a real threat but also dealt with less depth than they have had in previous years– especially on the offensive line. And with Trent Williams‘ future murky due to a contract standoff, the 49ers bolstered their line ahead of the official start of free agency, signing former New England Patriots tackle, Vederian Lowe.

49ers, Lowe Reach Agreement

Lowe, a sixth round draft pick in 2022, never emerged as a starter during his three and a half year stint with the Patriots, spending his time there as a swing tackle/depth piece. But still being only 26 and showing flashes of potential, the 49ers signed Lowe to a two-year, $12 million deal to provide added help on an otherwise depleted offensive line.

“Patriots OT Vederian Lowe to the 49ers on a two-year deal worth max value of $12M with $5.75M guaranteed,” ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler tweeted.

Lowe missed a majority of the 2024 season with a torn labrum, but returned in ’25 and played over 300 snaps at left tackle after Patriots’ star left tackle, Will Campbell, went down with an MCL injury. Performing well in Campbell’s absence, Lowe allowed only one sack and two quarterback hits and helped Drake Maye play at MVP-level all year long. Now, Lowe comes to the 49ers as the expected swing tackle, while also providing a safety blanket in the event that Williams ends up departing.

Lowe’s Career Thus Far

Originally drafted by the Minnesota Vikings, Lowe was traded to the Patriots ahead of the start of the 2022 regular season– making his debut in week two as the starting left tackle. Over the next couple of seasons, Lowe established himself as a reliable backup, coming up big in the clutch when called upon.

The 49ers certainly have a lot of moves to make this offseason if they want to return to Super Bowl contention in 2026, but signing Lowe is the first step in that direction in giving them more help at football’s most important position group.
