Packers linked to ‘very competitive’ cornerback to add quality secondary depth

The Packers could look to bolster the secondary in new coordinator Jonathan Gannon’s defense, during next month’s NFL Draft.

Despite not owning a first-round pick in next month’s 2026 NFL Draft, the Packers could still have the chance to add a legitimate playmaker in the secondary to jumpstart a rebuild on defense for Green Bay.

Packers linked to Arizona State CB Keith Abney II

Green Bay Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst talks with head coach Matt LaFleur during fifth day of training camp on July 28, 2025, at Ray Nitschke Field in Ashwaubenon, Wis.

In Pro Football Focus NFL analyst Max Chadwick’s latest NFL Mock Draft, the Packers emerge with Arizona State cornerback Keith Abney II with the No. 52 overall pick, in the second round.

Abney, 6-foot and 190 pounds, produced 44 total tackles last season, with one sack, two forced fumbles, and a pair of interceptions.

“He’s trusted and well-respected in (Arizona State’s) building. Very competitive and very smart,” an AFC regional scout tells NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein.

Abney’s competitive edge and ball skills would be a major step toward solidifying the back end of a new look Packers secondary.

If Green Bay can land a playmaker of Abney’s caliber in the second round, it could prove to be one of the heists of the draft that accelerates their path back to defensive dominance.
