HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Hawaii-born NFL star is starting a new chapter with another team.
The NFL announced that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will be joining the Atlanta Falcons.
Tagovailoa plans to sign a one-year minimum contract with the Falcons after the Miami Dolphins announced they were releasing him, marking the end of his six-year tenure in Miami after they drafted him with the fifth overall pick in 2020.
In 2024, the Dolphins signed Tagovailoa to a record contract that made him the highest-paid player in franchise history. This triggered an NFL‑record $99 million dead cap hit, a charge on a team’s salary cap for a player no longer on its roster.
The Dolphins will still pay $54 million in guaranteed money as part of that deal.
The contract with Atlanta will not be official until the beginning of the new league year on March 11.
