If the club intends on putting itself in a position to regularly contend, it will have to put together another near-flawless offseason as it brings aboard pass-rushers, wide receivers, offensive linemen, linebackers, and tight ends -- and they reportedly took their first big swing by signing offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker.

The Patriots signed Alijah Vera-Tucker because:

The Patriots didn't just need someone to slot in between Will Campbell and Jared Wilson, they needed someone who was going to raise the entire unit's ceiling.
Vera-Tucker was brought in to do exactly that, as he is the textbook example of one's greatest ability being availability -- grading out among the very best at his position (77.7 in 2024; 72.5 in 2021) in the two seasons in which he appeared in double-digit games, according to Pro Football Focus.
Vera-Tucker has missed nearly as many games (42) as he has appeared in (43) since being drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, but there's no doubt that he is worth whatever risk comes with signing him thanks to his versatility (has started games at four different position) and upside (nine career sacks allowed) -- especially for the team who has decent depth in Ben Brown.
The Patriots' next move should be:

AVT has tantalizing talent, but the fact of the matter is that he hasn't done anything to convince anyone that he's capable of staying healthy -- so the next step is figuring out who will start games during his inevitable absences. New England likely believes it can find that person during the 2026 NFL Draft, and could start to target prospects who fit the mold in the middle rounds -- with the organization currently possessing picks No. 125, 131, 169, and 190.
