Mo Salah set to overtake Jamie Carragher record as Arne Slot chases Kenny Dalglish

Mo Salah could break a record set by Jamie Carragher in the Champions League, with the Egyptian playing in his eighth UCL campaign for Liverpool.

The first leg against Galatasaray will be Salah’s 81st game in the European Cup proper for Liverpool, overtaking Carragher’s tally of 80 appearances excluding qualifiers.

The Egyptian is still some way off Carragher’s 150 outings in all European matches, as he sits fourth on that list with 92 apps, behind Sami Hyypia and Steven Gerrard also.

In addition to Salah’s record-breaking appearance, Tuesday night will also mark Arne Slot‘s 100th game in charge.

He has won 62 of his 99 so far, and a victory in Istanbul will see him break Kenny Dalglish’s club record of wins in the first century of games.

Salah’s next goal will see him become the first African ever to score 50 goals in the Champions League.

A goal or an assist from Dominik Szoboszlai will see him become the first Liverpool player to score or assist in seven successive Champions League games.

Szoboszlai could become the first Liverpool player to score in four successive away games in Europe since Salah did so in a sequence of eight between November 2020 and February 2022.

Cody Gakpo’s next goal will see him become the 58th player to score 50 goals for Liverpool in all competitions and the second Dutchman to do so after Dirk Kuyt.

Galatasaray finished in 20th place in the league phase with 10 points, winning three and drawing one of the eight fixtures.

They defeated Juventus 7-5 on aggregate in the play-off round but needed extra-time to go through in Turin.

They won the first leg 5-2 at home, but were 3-0 down at the end of 90 minutes before Victor Osimhen and Baris Yilmaz netted to take them through.

They conceded 11 times in the league phase and another five in the knockout round. They have lost only four of the last 24 games at home in Europe and one of the five this season.

This is the first time they have reached the knockout stages of the Champions League since 2013-14, losing to Chelsea in the round of 16.

They seek to reach the quarter-finals as they last did in 2013 when they went out to Real Madrid. Their best-ever European Cup campaign saw them reach the semi-finals in 1989, only to lose 5-1 on aggregate to Steaua Bucharest.
