Newcastle United latest news: Both Eddie Howe and Hansi Flick have a number of injury issues to contend with ahead of their Champions League meeting at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United and Barcelona will be without five senior players apiece when they meet at St James’ Park on Tuesday night.

The Magpies and Spanish giants met in September in the league phase with Barca triumphing 2-1 on that day. A brace from Marcus Rashford ensured that despite a late Anthony Gordon goal, it would be the visitors that headed back to Spain with all three points and a win on matchday one.

Almost six months on from that game, the two sides prepare to meet again on Tyneside but with a lot more than just three points at stake. Eddie Howe’s side, though, will head into Tuesday night’s match on the back of a defeat against Manchester City on Saturday, whilst Barcelona defeated Athletic Club 1-0.

Here, we take a look at the latest injury news from both camps ahead of the first-leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash between Newcastle United and Barcelona at St James’ Park.

Barcelona injury news v Newcastle United

Gavi - out

Gavi has travelled to Newcastle with his teammates but is not expected to feature at St James’ Park. Gavi is expected to miss both legs of this tie with a return after the international break most likely for the young Spanish international.

Frenkie De Jong - out

De Jong marshalled the midfield at St James’ Park during their league phase meeting but will not feature on Tyneside this time around.

Jules Kounde - out

Kounde suffered an injury during Barcelona’s Copa Del Rey tie against Atletico Madrid last month and has been ruled-out of Tuesday night’s game. He is likely to miss the second-leg in Spain next week as well.

Alejandro Balde - out

Like Kounde before him, Balde was also injured during Barcelona’s Copa Del Rey meeting with Atletico Madrid. A hamstring injury will keep him out of both legs of this tie.

Andreas Christensen - out

Christensen suffered a partial ACL injury in December and faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Newcastle United injury news v Barcelona

Fabian Schar - out

Schar suffered an ankle ligament injury against Leeds United in January and has been ruled-out of action for the foreseeable future. He may return to action next month if his recovery goes as planned.

Emil Krafth - out

Krafth has undergone surgery on a knee injury and is expected to miss the remainder of the season. He has not been named in Newcastle United’s ‘List A’ squad for the knockout stages and thus cannot feature against Barcelona.

Bruno Guimaraes - out

Guimaraes suffered an injury late on against Spurs last month and has not been seen in action since. It has since been revealed that the Brazilian will miss a substantial amount of matches and is not expected to return to action until after the next international break. An estimated eight to ten weeks on the sidelines will keep Guimaraes, who is currently back in Brazil receiving treatment, out of action until April.

Lewis Miley - out

Miley hasn’t featured since their draw with PSG in January with a leg injury continuing to keep him sidelined. There is hope that he can return to action before the second-leg of this tie but he won’t feature at St James’ Park.

Mark Gillespie - out

Gillespie has not been named in Newcastle United’s ‘List A’ squad for the knockout stages and thus cannot feature against Barcelona.
