Liverpool’s January restraint always pointed toward something bigger, and all the noise around Anfield now is about what happens once the summer window swings open.
After a record-breaking window last summer, this upcoming one feels more like a calculated next step in a longer rebuild rather than a wild splurge, with key areas of the squad already clearly mapped out behind the scenes. The club has effectively done part of its business early by tying up a deal worth up to £60m for Rennes centre-back Jérémy Jacquet, who will finally walk through the doors at Kirkby at the end of the season.
That move alone shows how far ahead the recruitment team has been planning, especially with question marks over the futures of some of the current centre-backs and a clear need to lower the age profile at the back. But Jacquet is unlikely to be the only arrival.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed what the Reds will be looking for at the end of the season.
Reporting on The Here We Go Podcast, Fabrizio Romano poured cold water on a Michael Olise move, but added that wingers will be a priority nonetheless:
“Yeah, always many links about this one because, yes, it’s true that Liverpool appreciates Olise, but who doesn’t like Olise? I mean, he’s one of the best players in the world,” the Italian transfer guru said.
“He’s doing fantastic at Bayern, so obviously many links with Liverpool because Liverpool will add players on the winger position.”
“So Liverpool will do something there. Could be one, could be two, we will see. But at the moment, Michael Olise is seen as an unrealistic target because he doesn’t have a release clause, and also because Bayern absolutely want to keep Olise.”
