Michael Porter Jr. #17 of the Brooklyn Nets is one of the mysteries of the NBA trade rumor mill.

A night and day difference is what Michael Porter Jr. has experienced since moving on from the Denver Nuggets to join the Brooklyn Nets.

During his tenure with the Nuggets, Porter experienced a franchise that was steadily focused on making a championship run. He even won a title with the team.

But now that he’s with the Nets, Porter is in a rebuilding situation. The veteran sharpshooter is standing out on a personal level, but he knows his season will be over in April.

Will that change his mind about wanting to stick with the Nets in the future?

“I’m enjoying my time here,” Porter Jr. said on The Emily Austin Show.

“It’s obviously different than Denver, but um, you know, I’m 27 now. And to have this time of my life to embrace this different opportunity. I’m all about it. So, I’m excited for not only the remainder of this year, but going forward hopefully with Brooklyn.”

Porter was brutally honest about his thoughts on the idea of tanking in the NBA. He was very much against it, although everybody in the league understands the reason behind it.

While it might be difficult for Porter to stomach another season similar to the 2025-2026 run, the Nets can feel good knowing that they still have the forward’s attention.

Porter didn’t look to force his way out at the trade deadline, despite being in a losing situation. And his latest quote clearly shows that nothing has changed with his mindset on that front.

What’s MPJ’s Contract Situation?

When the Nets acquired Porter in the offseason via trade, they took on his five-year $179.2 million contract.

After finishing his $35.8 million season with the Nuggets in 2024-2025, Porter was slated to make $38.3 million this season. The Nets will on the hook for another $40.8 million next year unless they cut ties in the summer or before the 2027 trade deadline.

When Porter arrived from Colorado, he wrapped up a six-year tenure with the Nuggets. The veteran forward appeared in 345 games. He averaged 16.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game, while shooting 40% from three.

Since joining the Nets, Porter has appeared in 51 games. He is averaging 24.3 points per game, while knocking down 36% from three. Along with his scoring, Porter has dished out 3.1 assists per game and has come down with 7.2 rebounds per game.

Although he didn’t crack the All-Star game for the first time, Porter was widely viewed as a snub. In Denver, he proved he could be productive as a key role player on a championship-ready squad.

In Brooklyn, he is a valuable top option. If the Nets are ready to begin turning things around next season, it seems Porter is interested in being a part of that. However, he’ll still be a name to keep an eye on in the summer as his future will come into question.
