Newcastle United latest news: Eddie Howe has a number of big calls to make against Barcelona in the Champions League.
Eddie Howe’s side have already faced the Spanish giants this season, going down 2-1 at St James’ Park back in September, but will head into tonight’s game with confidence that they can upset the odds and secure a good result to take to the Camp Nou next week.
Howe will be without a number of key players tonight, though, but he will be able to welcome back Jacob Ramsey from suspension. Tino Livramento is also slowly returning to fitness, but will Howe take a risk on starting the former Chelsea and Southampton man at St James’ Park.
Here, we take a look at the Newcastle United starting XI that Howe could name for his side’s UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash with Barcelona at St James’ Park. Do you agree with our picks? Follow us on our social media channels and let us know your thoughts there.
Newcastle United predicted XI v Barcelona
Aaron Ramsdale
Arguably Howe’s biggest call on Tuesday night will be who will start in goal. Ramsdale has got the nod in their last two matches and on the balance of probabilities he will likely start again against Barcelona.
Kieran Trippier
Trippier will likely lead the Magpies against Barcelona in the absence of Bruno Guimaraes. He is one of a few members of the squad with experience of these types of fixtures.
Malick Thiaw
Thiaw has been one of Newcastle United’s most consistent performers this season and it was Fabian Schar’s injury against Barcelona back in September that sparked his introduction to becoming a regular under Howe.

Dan Burn
Burn will be desperate to help his team achieve another special European night at St James’ Park.
Lewis Hall
Hall will likely come up against Lamine Yamal on Tuesday night and will be responsible for defending against one of Europe’s hottest talents. Hopefully he can show his own immense talent and help his side both in defence and attack.
Jacob Ramsey
Ramsey was suspended at the weekend but is likely to return to the starting XI against Barcelona. He has been very good in recent weeks and will be desperate to shine after missing September’s game due to injury.
Sandro Tonali
Tonali’s performance could be the thing that dictates whether they are a success or not.
Joelinton
A huge powerhouse performance is needed from Joelinton at St James’ Park. If he can be at his very physical best, then Newcastle United stand a chance of being a success.
Anthony Elanga
If Newcastle United decide to attack Barcelona with pace, then Elanga, if he can rediscover the form he showed whilst at Nottingham Forest, could be a huge weapon for them to unleash.
Anthony Gordon
Gordon has been sensational in this season’s Champions League. Newcastle United would love a goal or two from him on Tuesday night.
Harvey Barnes
On Saturday night, Barnes showed once again how clinical he can be in front of goal. Hopefully he is given an opening or two against Barcelona.
