49ers trade rumor could lead to blockbuster deal with Patriots, writer believes

Things could get interesting for the San Francisco 49ers following their 2026 NFC Divisional round exit.

According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the franchise is ‘open’ to trading disgruntled Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams.

Niner Noise’s Michael Haney believes that the 49ers’ recent trade rumor could open up the door for a blockbuster deal with the New England Patriots.

“Trent Williams could land with Patriots after 49ers trade rumors surface,” Haney wrote Monday. “Williams and the 49ers have had multiple contract standoffs over the years. This development isn't necessarily surprising, but it does feel like the two sides could finally go their separate ways. If reports are true, a trade is very much on the table.”

“In terms of suitors, the Patriots are a logical destination. 2025 first-round pick Will Campbell had an embarrassing playoff run, leading many analysts to project a move inside to guard. If New England is looking for an established pass protector to help out Drake Maye, Williams is the best option they're going to find.”

Maye was on the wrong side of history during the 2026 postseason. Despite guiding the Patriots to an appearance in Super Bowl 60, he was sacked 21 times in three contests, which is the most sacks taken by a quarterback in the playoffs (Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow previously held the record with 19 sacks).

Needless to say, Maye must receive reliable protection moving forward for him to reach his full potential with the Patriots. Trading for Williams could go a long way toward giving Maye extreme comfort in the pocket, as the 37-year-old is coming off a phenomenal 2025-26 season with the 49ers.

Williams only allowed four sacks and committed just four penalties with the 49ers last season. While the Patriots will have their fair share of competition for Williams in the offseason, he’s certainly a contributor worth exploring a trade for.
