Packers Release Nate Hobbs After Blink-and-You-Miss-It Tenure

According to Tom Pelissero, the Packers are releasing cornerback Nate Hobbs, bringing an end to a very brief era in Green Bay. Hobbs arrived with the promise of adding experience and competition to the Packers’ cornerback room, but apparently the team decided that experiment had run its course before it ever really got going. The veteran cornerback arrived with an injury history and lived up to that billing, dealing with shoulder, ankle and hamstring issues during his one year in Green Bay.

The team will designate Hobbs as a June 1st release after balking at paying his $6.25m roster bonus. The Packers will therefore carry his cap on their books until June when they will gain $8.8m in cap space.

The move continues what has been a fairly active reshuffling of the Packers’ secondary this offseason. With the addition of Benjamin St-Juste and a number of young defensive backs already on the roster and more likely on the way through the draft, Green Bay seems intent on clearing out space for players they view as longer-term fits.

All in all, Hobbs’ time in Green Bay will likely be remembered the same way it unfolded: quickly, quietly, and with barely enough time for anyone to get used to seeing him in green and gold.
