Danny Murphy has conceded pal Steven Gerrard has only found management success at Rangers - as he insisted a return to the dugout must happen soon.

Before the appointment of Danny Rohl as Russell Martin's successor, Gerrard was locked in talks with chairman Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe of 49ers Enterprises. However, he walked away after several rounds of discussions.

The former England international became a legend at the Glasgow giants after he ended Celtic 's stranglehold on the Scottish Premiership by bringing the title to Ibrox in 2021. The Liverpool icon has been out of work since leaving Al-Ettifaq in January 2025.

But the former Aston Villa and Light Blues boss has been touted as a surprise successor to Arne Slot, as the Reds endure a dismal defence of their Premier League crown. Murphy - who played alongside Gerrard for seven years at Anfield - reckons Liverpool should swerve the sensational appointment.

He urged Gerrard to look elsewhere and rebuild his management career. He told Spreadex Sports: “Stevie’s only really had his success at Rangers and the Villa job kind of tarnished his reputation a little bit, which as a young manager might be a little bit unfair.

“I think Stevie would be a risk at this stage. He hasn’t managed for a while and maybe he needs another job first to kick on a little bit before.

"Of course, as a former teammate and friend of Stevie’s, I’d love him to get the job and be given the chance because he’s a legend of the club and the fans would get right behind him.

"But that’s probably the heart rather than the head.”

The current Ibrox gaffer Rohl is facing scrutiny over his position after the Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Celtic last Sunday.

It following a draw with Martin O'Neill's men at Ibrox the previous week in the Premiership, which dealt a major blow to Rangers hopes of claiming the title this term.

Speaking on Record Sport's Hotline Live , Keith Jackson felt that Rohl may need some big results before the end of the season after damaging derby day results.

“I’m not sure that Rangers have it within them now to recover from that and make a real tilt at the title.

“If Rangers don’t win the title, maybe come third or fourth, who knows? Danny Rohl will start next season under the cosh, and a defeat in the first Old Firm game of that season could be really damaging for him.”
