The New York Giants have been reshaping their roster as they get ready for the first year of coach John Harbaugh. Having a coach of his status typically means he gets a say in some of the personnel decisions, including who he would like in terms of free agents. They have been aggressive in free agency thus far, including making a signing for their secondary. Let’s take a closer look at who it is and what he will bring to the Giants.

The New York Giants have continued to land free agents, as the team signed cornerback Greg Newsome II to a one-year contract worth up to $10 million, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Newsome struggled a bit in coverage last season as he would allow 56 catches on 89 targets (62.9%) for 686 yards and five touchdowns last season between the Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars.
Newsome will quickly rise up the ranks for the New York Giants as Paulson Adebo and Deonte Banks were the projected starting cornerbacks before this signing happened. In 2025, Newsome’s 55.4 PFF grade ranked 85th of 114 qualified cornerbacks, but with Harbaugh, he could be primed for a bounce-back season. He is a former first-round pick in the 2021 draft by the Cleveland Browns, so there is a lot of upside in this deal for the New York Giants in terms of talent.
It will be interesting to see how he fits in Harbaugh’s scheme. Newsome brings the ability to play in press coverages more often, which will help the Giants be more physical. It will be intriguing to see how the undersized Newsome is able to play for the Giants this season.
