The San Francisco 49ers made a blockbuster move Monday by signing future Hall of Fame wide receiver Mike Evans to a three-year deal worth $60.4 million. The legendary Tampa Bay Buccaneer could be the icing on the cake for San Francisco as it looks to finally bring home its first Super Bowl in over three decades.

But why stop there? With over $20 million in cap space still and taking into account the potential free-agent losses of Jauan Jennings and Brandon Aiyuk, could the Niners go sign another free-agent receiver within their price range? Former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky believes that Green Bay Packers free-agent wide receiver Romeo Doubs should be signed at some point soon. Perhaps the Niners could be the team to get him.

While Doubs doesn’t have the career portfolio that Evans has, he was able to carve out a solid role for himself as a member of the Packers. A key option for franchise quarterback Jordan Love, the former Nevada star set career-highs in receiving yards (724), catch percentage (64.7%), and yards per target (8.5) in 2025.

Here is what Orlovsky bluntly wrote on social media Tuesday regarding Doubs:

“Someone needs to sign Doubs today early.”

Look for the 25-year-old pass-catcher to earn a multi-year deal, and according to Orlovsky, the team that gets him could be revealed by Tuesday. Again, he is not an All-Pro pass-catcher, but in the right offense, he can be the perfect role player. In a complex 49ers offense where each player has his own role within head coach Kyle Shanahan’s scheme, Doubs could be the perfect complement to Evans.

The 49ers Look to Compete in the NFC West

GM John Lynch’s signing of Evans speaks volumes about how he feels about these next few seasons for his 49ers. This team has been on the doorstep of winning a Super Bowl multiple times in the last seven seasons. But with veteran players such as All-Pro tight end George Kittle and All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey not getting any younger, San Francisco can only have so many cuts at the tree.

In a division that includes the Super Bowl-champion Seattle Seahawks and ever-present Los Angeles Rams, winning is clearly not a given. Both the 49ers and Rams won 12 games last season and still were unable to earn a home playoff game. This is proof that if you have the opportunity to get better, especially so that you can win your division, you take advantage of it.

With a player like Romeo Doubs, who could be worth a major contract at the right price, the Niners’ offense could have the chance to be even better in 2026. But if Lynch and the organization decide not to pursue another wide receiver in free agency, they still have seven picks within the first four rounds of the upcoming NFL Draft on deck.
