Florian Wirtz has found his best form after a slot start at Liverpool and puts it down to some home truths.

Liverpool should always look to hoover up the best young talent from around Europe and that is exactly what they did last summer.

Alongside Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz was one of the Bundesliga’s brightest stars last season with both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich trying to get deals done with the Germany international. The Reds had spent months working on a transfer for the 22-year old and broke the British record to bring him to Anfield. After a slow start, Wirtz now has 14 goal contributions in 36 appearances and starting to look more like a £115m player.

Florian Wirtz opens up on Liverpool form

With six in his last 10 games before getting injured, Wirtz had really started to make an impact with the player himself explaining how he, and the team, has fought their way back into Champions League contention with the FA Cup also still a realistic possibility: "There were a few meetings in the changing room with only us players," Wirtz said on the Reds Roundtable.

"We had a difficult start and this club and this team was not used to this, that we don't win almost every game, you know? And I think it was important to believe as a group, that we are making process and it needs to go better. Us, as a team, we want to give the fans something, but we are not in the position to say: 'We are winning this or that'. So we focus on the games, but we know that there's still something to play for.”

How Liverpool need to adapt to Wirtz

Wirtz was never the problem. Despite adding more goals centrally in Ekitike and Alexander Isak – when he is fit – Liverpool have suffered due to a defence that has rarely looked comfortable and Mohamed Salah’s form taking a nosedive. The Egyptian hit record breaking heights last season, however, nobody could have foreseen just how much he would struggle as the Reds looked to retain their title.

Liverpool have also lost creativity in the full-back areas which, when Wirtz has played off the left, has seen them struggle against low-blocks. Slot’s no.7 needs runners, players moving between lines and beyond the opposition defence so that he can pick them out. There is no point signing such a good passer of the ball and having a forward line that stands and waits for the ball. If Liverpool are to finish the season with silverware, Wirtz needs to be at his best.
