The injury-riddled Golden State Warriors received a notable milestone performance from De’Anthony Melton on Monday night — even as the result slipped away.

Melton delivered an efficient all-around effort in limited minutes, but the short-handed Warriors fell 119–116 to the Utah Jazz to close out a difficult three-game road trip. The loss dropped Golden State back to .500 and pushed them down to ninth place in the tightly packed Western Conference playoff race.

More importantly for the Warriors’ long-term outlook, Melton’s appearance marked a key step in his recovery from a torn ACL: the first time this season he has been cleared to play both ends of a back-to-back.

Golden State head coach Steve Kerr confirmed the team deliberately limited Melton’s minutes Monday in preparation for Tuesday night’s second leg against the Chicago Bulls.

De’Anthony Melton Shines in Limited Minutes for Warriors

Melton made an immediate impact despite being capped at just 20 minutes.

The defensive-minded guard poured in a team-high 22 points while filling up the stat sheet with seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. He shot 7-of-16 from the field, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, and was perfect on five free throws.

After sitting out Saturday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder for left knee injury management, Melton returned to the Warriors’ starting lineup and quickly provided a spark.

Late in the fourth quarter, he drilled a clutch 3-pointer that trimmed Utah’s lead to 117–116 and briefly put Golden State within striking distance.

However, the Warriors could not complete the comeback.

Jazz two-way guard Elijah Harkless sealed the victory by knocking down two free throws in the final seconds to reach a career-high 16 points.

Still, Melton’s performance highlighted the steady progress in his recovery from the ACL injury that required surgery early in his first stint with Golden State.

Steve Kerr Explains Warriors’ Plan for Melton’s First Back-to-Back

The Warriors have carefully monitored Melton’s workload since his return, but those restrictions are now beginning to loosen.

Kerr confirmed after the game that Monday’s 20-minute cap was intentional.

“Yeah, because he’s going to play tomorrow,” Kerr said. “So we’re playing Melt for the first time on a back-to-back, and we wanted to limit his minutes to 20 tonight.”

The decision reflects the team’s cautious approach with the veteran guard as he continues building stamina following the major knee injury.

Even Tuesday’s game against Chicago is expected to come with some level of minute monitoring, but the fact that Melton is available for both games marks a significant development for the Warriors’ rotation.

Warriors Continue to Struggle Without Stephen Curry

Melton’s strong outing was not enough to overcome the Warriors’ ongoing roster challenges.

Golden State was playing without franchise cornerstone Stephen Curry for the 14th straight game as he continues recovering from injury. The team is expected to receive further updates on Curry’s status following a scheduled re-evaluation on Tuesday.

Jimmy Butler, their other star, has already been ruled out for the season with a torn ACL.

Despite those absences, the Warriors still had chances to win Monday’s game.

Golden State shot just 6-of-24 from three-point range in the second half and missed multiple late opportunities to close the gap. Brandin Podziemski finished with 14 points but missed four free throws in the fourth quarter.

Gui Santos added 15 points while Seth Curry — returning after missing 40 games due to back issues — chipped in 13.

The loss was particularly frustrating given the Jazz were also severely undermanned, playing without several key contributors, including Lauri Markkanen, Jaren Jackson Jr., Walker Kessler, Jusuf Nurkić and rookie Ace Bailey.

“That hurts,” Santos said. “It’s not good to lose a game like that. We know that we’ve got to win games like that, but we cannot change it now. We’ve just got to go to the next one and win it.”

Warriors Fighting to Stay in Western Conference Play-In Race

The defeat marked Golden State’s fourth loss in its last five games, further tightening the pressure in the Western Conference standings.

With the Warriors hovering around the play-in tournament line, every game has taken on heightened importance.

Melton’s return to a heavier workload could help stabilize the backcourt while Curry remains sidelined.

For a Warriors team searching for consistency amid injuries, Monday’s milestone may prove more important than the final score.
