Darius Lane curled home the opener after eight minutes after working room to let fly from the edge of the penalty area and Bailey Palmer added another fine finish on half-time as his shot arced away from the keeper.

Bode Newnham-Reeve, only 16, rounded things off in some style early in the second period as Albion launched a counter-attack.

He kept the ball in wide on the right, cut inside a defender and then a bent a left-foot finish inside the far post.

Liam Doyle’s save late on secured the clean sheet.

Menzies, who stepped in at the helm after Bjorn Hamberg returned to his native Sweden to take charge of Elfsborg recently, added: “I’m learning loads constantly.

“It’s a a role that I would have liked to have done at some point so it was good to get the opportunity now, even if it was a bit unexpected.”

Menzies highlighted the expert input of former first-team striker Tomer Hemed, who is working alongside him.

The under-18s host Chelsea on Saturday.
