Some of Liverpool’s new recruits haven’t hit the ground running and one could already see his place in danger.

The summer of 2025 saw Liverpool attempt to move on from the Jurgen Klopp era where they ripped up a successful squad and successful game plan.

Arne Slot has lurched from one idea to the next in this campaign, trying to fit two strikers and a no.10 into a starting XI that was previously focused on providing Mohamed Salah with as many goalscoring situations as possible. What they also did was attempt to move on from two full-backs who had been a major creative outlet and providers of ammunition for the forward line.

Liverpool competition for left-back target

The latter has been one of the biggest problems between Andy Robertson’s marauding runs down the left and Trent Alexander-Arnold's rapier-like passing from the right. Liverpool do seem to be keen to address Milos Kerkez’s sub-par impact, although they will need to get their noses in front of Man United if they want to strike a deal for January target Antonee Robinson. According to Sports Boom*,* Man Utd are “weighing up a summer move” for Fulham left-back Robinson, who is valued at £25million and keen to leave London this summer.

Robinson has “emerged as a serious target”, with the United hierarchy looking to strengthen a position that is overly reliant on Luke Shaw, a player whose body has held out this season, but has rarely been able to play over 20 games a season in recent years. Robinson is closer to Robertson in terms of profile and it may be that Liverpool have had a re-think. Kerkez is ok, but the lack of impact in the final third is a problem that needs to be fixed.

Robinson “keen” on move to Liverpool

In January, TEAMtalk transfer journalist Graeme Bailey revealed that Robinson was a potential target for Liverpool and that a move would have been made if Robertson transfer to Spurs had been signed and sealed: “Sources have confirmed to us that discussions have also reopened regarding Fulham star Robinson, a player the club continue to rate extremely highly, over a potential move in the summer of 2026.The 28‑year‑old USA international left-back, formerly on the books of Everton, is understood to be keen on a return to Merseyside.

Fulham, potentially as part of the deal, were interested in taking Kostas Tsimikas and had also enquired about Harvey Elliot, however, the latter would only be able to move in the summer having featured for two clubs already this season. With Robertson set to leave Anfield at the end of his contract, Liverpool could hold all the cards in the chase for a player who could be the answer to one of Slot’s many problems.
