Travis Kelce breaks silence on postponing retirement, signing with the Chiefs

Travis Kelce didn't wait long into free agency to make his decision on whether or not he'd retire.

From there, he had to decide what team to actually join as a free agent. Of course, he had one obvious choice, and he took it: Kelce is returning to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The legendary tight end joined The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday to share what went into his thinking.

"I'm still in love with the game," Kelce said, "And I still love putting the pads on."

Kelce had provided some hints in this direction earlier in the offseason.

Maybe one of the biggest was when the Chiefs brought back Eric Bieniemy to be their offensive coordinator again. Kelce said on his New Heights podcast that he was looking forward to seeing EB in the Chiefs' facility.

Of course, he could've meant with himself as a bystander, but that would've been odd wording to use. It certainly seemed like Kelce planned to play for Bieniemy again.

Now, he'll get the chance.

"I can't wait to get back in the building," Kelce told McAfee.

The Chiefs are surely looking forward to it, too.

Even as he's aged, Kelce still remains a high-quality TE and a trusted target for Patrick Mahomes. The superstar QB will have to get back from his torn ACL to team up with Kelce once again, but that should happen by an early point in the upcoming season.

The Chiefs went 6-11 in 2025, and all their leaders will want to bounce back from that. With Kelce back, that's a big step in the right direction.
