Liverpool star runs risk of Champions League suspension during Galatasaray tie

Liverpool have made five changes from the side that defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup fifth round on Friday night. Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz join Mohamed Salah in attack, replacing Rio Ngumoha and Cody Gakpo, who start on the bench.

As expected, Giorgi Mamardashvili starts in goal in place of the injured Alisson Becker, who did not travel after experiencing discomfort in training.

In defence, Ibrahima Konaté and Milos Kerkez come into the side for Curtis Jones and Andy Robertson, both of whom are among the substitutes in Istanbul.

Dominik Szoboszlai, who filled in at right-back in the previous match, moves back into midfield. Joe Gomez shifts out to full-back, while Konate partners Virgil van Dijk in central defence.

Ahead of the game, Arne Slot said: “They have a very good team and we have a very good team. So are you happy to play against them? No, there’s not one team which you prefer to play in the last 16 because they are all very good teams – including Galatasaray.

“We’ve already lost against them, so that tells you how difficult of a game it is for us. The good thing now is that we play two games. Where in the group stage you only play away against Galatasaray. Now we also have a chance to play in front of our own fans, which will be impressive for Galatasaray.

“These fans over here are very impressive, we’ve noticed that when we’ve played here. The good thing is we’ve experienced it already once now. That’s maybe a positive thing.

“The Galatasaray players are experiencing this every home game. But for us it was new when you have the ball that the whistling, if that’s the right word, is so loud. That was new for me and even for all of my experienced players. So, the good thing is that we’ve already experienced it.”

Curtis Jones faces the risk of suspension for the return leg at Anfield against Galatasaray if he receives a booking in Istanbul. Under UEFA Champions League rules, any player who collects three yellow cards, or any subsequent odd number, from the league stage onward is suspended for the next match.

Jones currently has two cautions in the competition. Galatasaray also have several players walking a disciplinary tightrope ahead of the second leg, with seven members of their squad sitting on two bookings.

Goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakır, defenders Ismail Jakobs, Davinson Sanchez and Abdülkerim Bardakcı, as well as forwards Roland Sallai and Victor Osimhen, have each been cautioned twice in the competition this season.

Meanwhile, January loan signing Noa Lang also arrived with two bookings picked up earlier in the tournament while playing for Napoli.
