Why Jets, Raiders pulled off trade involving Geno Smith

The New York Jets and Las Vegas Raiders made a trade on Tuesday involving quarterback Geno Smith.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Raiders are trading Smith and a 2026 seventh-round pick to the Jets for a 2026 sixth-round pick.

"Trade: the Raiders are sending QB Geno Smith and a 2026 7th-round pick to the New York Jets in exchange for a 2026 6th-round pick, per ESPN sources. Smith returns to the team for which he started his NFL career for in 2013."

New York has a dire need at quarterback, as Justin Fields didn't pan out this past season, and the rest of the quarterback room is lackluster.

Though Smith had an awful year with the Raiders in 2025, he has had success in the past with the Seattle Seahawks and could be a nice bridge for the Jets as they look for their quarterback of the future. Smith also began his career with New York, so this is a full-circle moment.

As for the Raiders, trading Smith paves the way for the franchise to select Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the top pick in April's draft.
