Doubs was a free agent for the first time in his career after four seasons with the Packers. The fourth-round pick out of Nevada spent his rookie season in 2022 with Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, and Rodgers had inquired about Doubs’ availability ahead of this season. Ahead of the start of the legal tampering period, Doubs was connected to the Steelers and was a potential target for the team as they look to bolster their receiver room.
But with a Rodgers return uncertain and the Steelers trading for and extending Michael Pittman Jr. yesterday, signing Doubs didn’t feel likely. While further receiver upgrades in Pittsburgh are likely through free agency or the draft, adding Doubs at his price tag wouldn’t have made much sense after acquiring Pittman.
Last season, Doubs caught 55 passes for a career-high 724 yards and six touchdowns. He was regarded as one of the best receivers on the open market, and with WR Alec Pierce re-signing with the Indianapolis Colts yesterday, Doubs had a strong market. He’ll now join the reigning AFC Champions and provide another weapon for MVP candidate Drake Maye at receiver. The Patriots had a need at the position after the team released WR Stefon Diggs after just one season with the team.
For his career, Doubs has 202 receptions for 2,424 yards and 21 touchdowns. He has caught at least three touchdowns in every season he’s played, including a career-high eight touchdown grabs in 2023. He’ll join the likes of Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins and DeMario Douglas in New England. The Patriots also have 2025 second-round pick Kyle Williams as well as undrafted free agent Efton Chism in the fold.
The Steelers will play Doubs and the Patriots in 2026. Doubs had three receptions for 44 yards in Green Bay’s Week 8 win over Pittsburgh this season.
