The quarterback carousel continues to spin around the NFL, and now veteran Geno Smith has a new home.
Sort of.
According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Las Vegas Raiders are trading Smith and a 2026 seventh-round pick to the New York Jets — the team he broke into the NFL with in 2013 — for a 2026 sixth-round pick.

According to Schefter, prior to the Raiders and Jets agreeing to the deal, Smith agreed to restructure his contract, allowing the trade to happen. Schefter reports the Raiders will pay the bulk of the deal, with the Jets being on the hook for just over the veteran minimum.

The trade by the Jets to acquire Smith comes a little over a year after the franchise signed Justin Fields away from the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency last offseason. The 2025 season did not go well for Fields though as he was benched multiple times under head coach Aaron Glenn, leading to an uncertain future this offseason.
With Smith, he’s coming off of a disastrous season with the Raiders, with Las Vegas announcing he was going to be cut or traded last week. He appeared in 15 games and went 2-13 as the starter before being benched late in the year in the first and only season under Pete Carroll in Sin City. Smith threw for 3,075 yards and 19 touchdowns in those 15 games, but he had a league-high 17 interceptions and another four fumbles.
The move back to New York brings Smith’s his career full circle. Smith was previously a second-round pick of the Jets in the 2013 NFL Draft out of West Virginia. During his time in New York, Smith was known more for a locker room dispute with a defensive player that led to him being punched in the face, breaking his jaw.
According to a
Now, he gets a chance to return back to New York and potentially finish out his career on a better note, albeit with another struggling franchise. Last season, the Jets started Fields in nine games, Tyrod Taylor in another six, and rookie Brady Cook in five games.
The Jets went 3-14 and now have the No. 2 overall pick in April’s draft.
