In 2013 the New York Jets drafted Geno Smith in the second round.
The Oxford dictionary defines drafted as to “select a person and bring them somewhere for a specific purpose.”
What that purpose is remains to be seen, but it is my absolute honor to announce that for the second time, the New York Jets have drafted Geno Smith to their organization. This time, via trade with the Las Vegas Raiders, not for not a second, but a late-round pick swap.
The whispers of Smith back to where it all began have been firmly in the mix this week, but a trade is the surprise. [Multiple outlets reported he’d be cut](/seattle-seahawks-news/163390/las-vegas-raiders-releasing-former-seahawks-geno-smith).
Perhaps New York feared Smith would not sign with them if it were his choice?
Firm final details are not available yet, but Tom Pelissero says that the Raiders will [indeed cover much of Smith’s salary](https://www.nfl.com/news/raiders-trading-qb-geno-smith-to-jets-in-late-round-pick-swap?campaign=Twitter_atn) and the Jets will pay only a little above league minimum.
A full circle we have come, have we not? The team that tried and nearly ruined both Sam Darnold and Geno Smith remains connected to the Seattle Seahawks through both quarterback journeys. Darnold, the first ever Super Bowl winner after playing for five NFL teams, and Smith, the one that really kicked off this whole “Jets-QBs-could-be-saved” theme that has dominated the NFL for four years.
The fans are, well, could we say uninspired?
For what it’s worth, the entire experiment for Las Vegas was a complete disaster, top to bottom, impossible for anyone to succeed. It was reminiscent of only a few franchises over the last two decades, like the…….New York Jets.
Smith heads from a team with a new coach, a bunch of draft picks and boatload of cap space to a team with a nearly new coach, bunch of draft picks and a boatload of cap space.
Should Geno succeed in New York, he would be the first quarterback to resurrect their career and then, re-resurrect it I guess back with the Jets.
Now that would be something.
