McCarthy spent a couple of years in South London before ending his career up in Scotland with Celtic.

The retired midfielder was back at Everton this week and he was asked by the social media team what his dream five-a-side would be made up of Toffees players.

James McCarthy misses out some key Everton players

Speaking to Everton’s X account, McCarthy named his five-a-side team, and clearly went for his former teammates.

“Do I need to put myself in it,” he joked.

“I’ll go Tim Howard in goal, Seamus, Bainsey, Me, Gareth Barry and Lukaku.”

When told that his team had six players in it, McCarthy dropped himself.

Interestingly, the 43-cap Republic of Ireland missed out the likes of Kevin Mirallas, Phil Jagielka and Ross Barkley, to name only a few.

James McCarthy was very underrated

McCarthy was seen as quite a steady player during his Everton career, but that’s doing him a disservice.

Speaking in 2014, Roberto Martinez explained perfectly how good he was.

“James is one of those players you sometimes don’t appreciate but he’s always there making sure the team has the right balance and what it needs,” Martinez said.

Would you be happy with this potential transfer Toffees fans? 🤔

Everton target Crysencio Summerville.

“He allows others to shine. He can adapt to different situations during a game when you need him to because of the tactical awareness that he has.

“At the weekend you saw that influence in the manner that we were able to get men forward, and give us the momentum to make it hard for Villa to keep a clean sheet.

“James never plays according to his age because of the incredible amount of experience he already has at 23.”
