How the Steelers Can Address Offensive Tackle Depth

ESPN's Brooke Pryor predicted general manager Omar Khan and the Pittsburgh Steelers to draft Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft.

One need that the Pittsburgh Steelers have yet to fill in the opening stages of the NFL’s legal tampering period is that of offensive tackle. While the team did make waves by trading for 1,000-yard pass-catcher Michael Pittman Jr. on Monday, as well as signing 1,000-yard running back Rico Dowdle, it still has to address the depth at the tackle position along the offensive line.

Steelers beat writer Nick Farabaugh believes there could be a good way for Pittsburgh to address it. That way could be a trade for young offensive tackle Blake Fisher.

The Pittsburgh Steelers Neeed to Consider Trading for Blake Fisher

Part of the reason why the Steelers may need to address the tackle position is because there have been injury issues with veteran tackle Broderick Jones. Here is what Farabaugh wrote on social media recently about Pittsburgh potentially addressing tackle with a trade:

“The Texans now have Trent Brown, Braden Smith, and Aireontae Ersery. Good OT depth. I wonder if the Steelers could maybe pry Blake Fisher out of there for a draft pick? Need an OT with Broderick questions, they had interest in him out of ND. If for nothing else, good depth.”

After the Houston Texans signed veteran offensive tackle Braden Smith to a multi-year deal, that now potentially leaves Fisher as the odd man out of the rotation. The former Notre Dame star has started 18 games out of the 35 that he has played in, including playoffs, during his young career. Still just 22 years of age, a new opportunity in Pittsburgh could be a wise decision for both parties.

The Steelers Have Stayed Aggressive This Offseason

Rico Dowdle Carolina Panthers

GettyRico Dowdle will be joining his third team in three seasons this year.

Not only did Pittsburgh make the moves to add a couple of offensive skill players in Pittman and Dowdle, but it also signed former Tampa Bay Buccaners starting cornerback Jamel Dean to a three-year deal. He now joins a defensive backs room with the likes of Joey Porter Jr. and Jalen Ramsey. So, the offense and defense have improved quickly, and NFL free agency doesn’t truly begin until Wednesday March 11th at 4 p.m. ET.

Keep in mind that the Steelers still have a little over $14 million in cap space, and they also have six draft picks within the first four round of the upcoming NFL Draft, which they are hosting. So, GM Omar Khan and new head coach Mike McCarthy have plenty of remaining opportunities to improve the team.

While Pittsburgh is still waiting on an answer from future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers on whether or not he will return for his 22nd career season and second with the team, it is wasting no time in its quest to turning itself into a Super Bowl contender. The rest of the league may want to keep an eye out for what the team in the Steel City will do next. It could be a trade for another offensive lineman.
