The Denver Broncos may not be finished reshaping their backfield this offseason.
After missing out on several top running back targets in free agency and re-signing J.K. Dobbins, Denver could still look to add another weapon.
New speculation suggests they may pursue a familiar name for head coach Sean Payton: New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara.
Several analysts around the league have floated the possibility of a Broncos-Saints trade centered around the five-time Pro Bowler. If it happened, the move would reunite Kamara with the coach who helped turn him into one of the most dangerous offensive weapons in football.
Broncos Linked to Alvin Kamara Trade Scenario
One proposed mock trade by Sports Illustrated would send Kamara to Denver in exchange for late-round draft compensation.
In that scenario, the Broncos would receive Kamara while the Saints would acquire a 2026 fifth-round pick.
Another prediction from Bleacher Report suggested Denver could potentially land the veteran running back for the final two picks in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Either scenario would represent a relatively low-risk move for a Broncos team still searching for additional offensive playmakers.
The connection between Kamara and Payton makes Denver an especially logical landing spot.
Payton coached Kamara in New Orleans from 2017 through 2021. During that stretch, Kamara averaged roughly 1,500 total yards and more than 13 touchdowns per season while earning five consecutive Pro Bowl selections and establishing himself as one of the league’s most versatile backs.
Even now, Kamara remains a dual-threat option capable of impacting games as both a runner and receiver.
Despite playing only 11 games during the 2025 season, he still finished with 471 rushing yards along with 33 receptions.
Kamara Could Add Depth to Broncos Backfield
Denver’s current backfield already includes veteran J.K. Dobbins and rising young running back RJ Harvey.
This gives the Broncos reason to remain cautious.
Dobbins has dealt with injuries throughout his career, and Denver’s rushing attack struggled to maintain consistency late in the season after he went down last year. Adding Kamara would give the offense another experienced playmaker capable of contributing immediately.
Kamara could also serve as a valuable mentor for Harvey while providing Denver with another reliable receiving option out of the backfield.
Harvey and Kamara have similar play styles, and Payton hopes Harvey can follow in Kamara’s footsteps from his days in New Orleans.
Even if the Broncos plan to rely heavily on Dobbins and Harvey, Kamara could function as a change-of-pace weapon while offering critical depth in case injuries strike again.
Coming off a deep playoff run and looking to take the next step toward a Super Bowl, the Broncos have made zero additions in free agency so far. Adding a proven veteran like Alvin Kamara could be an intriguing option to jumpstart their offseason moves.
And if the price truly ends up being as low as some projections suggest, Denver might find it difficult to pass up the opportunity to reunite Payton with one of the most dynamic players of his coaching career.
