Newcastle were poised to made the most of their opportunity against European giants Barcelona, but they let it slip away as they drew 1-1 in the first leg in their Champions League Round of 16 matchup.
As Barca sleep-walked through the 90 minutes on the road, the Magpies threw everything they had at the Blaugrana, eventually profiting in the 86th minute on a sloppy goal from Harvey Barnes.
Yet a penalty from Lamine Yamal with the final kick of the match spoiled the day, as Barcelona scraped together a level scoreline before heading back to the Camp Nou for next week's decider.
The Premier League side seemed on their way to a fully deserved victory, who kept their opponents in check with St. James’ Park at their backs. Lewis Hall logged a remarkable performance, locking down a quiet Lamine Yamal throughout the entire match to keep the visitors at bay.
Yet it wasn't to be, as Malick Thiaw was done in by Dani Olmo near the top of the penalty area, leaving the young teenage superstar to find the scoresheet after a drab performance overall.

Newcastle vs. Barcelona key moments
FULLTIME: Newcastle 1-1 Barcelona
Lamine Yamal's penalty was literally the final kick of the game! What a nightmare for Newcastle! The first leg lead was in their grasp, and they let it slip away! There's still everything to play for, but this will certainly feel like a gut punch at the end of a match they completely dominated.
90+4 min: PENALTY, BARCELONA! OH NO! THE HOSTS HAVE GIVEN BARCELONA A CHANCE TO EQUALISE!
In the final minute of added time, Dani Olmo absolutely cooks Malick Thiaw at the top of the penalty area, and the referee points to the spot!
Lamine Yamal has had a quiet night, but he steps up to the penalty spot and...GOAL! BARCELONA! WHAT A LATE TWIST!
86th min: GOAL! NEWCASTLE! HARVEY BARNES FINALLY PUTS NEWCASTLE AHEAD AFTER 86 MINUTES OF PRESSURE!
Ronaldo Araujo and Raphinha both leave Barnes wide open at the back post, and while the Newcastle forward doesn't make clean contact on the cross from Jacob Murphy, but it's enough to bundle the ball over the line past a floundering Joan Garcia who makes a mess of it!
The hosts have been the better side for nearly the entire match, and they finally make Barcelona pay for their complacency!

75th min: Chance, Newcastle! NEWCASTLE GO AGONISINGLY CLOSE!
Anthony Gordon strikes the post with a gorgeous curling effort from about 10 yards out, and the rebound cannons to Joelinton who stabs the ball into the back of the net, but the offside flag goes up! He's blatantly offside ball-watching as his teammate clatters the woodwork.
68th min: Robert Lewandowski puts a big chance wide!
Newcastle make a triple substitution, bringing on Anthony Gordon alongside Tino Livramento and Jacob Murphy. Barcelona respond with the introduction of Marcus Rashford and Dani Olmo. Pedri exits, which is a surprise from Hansi Flick.
61st min: Lamine Yamal has been invisible today, locked down by Lewis Hall and the Newcastle midfield. He gets on the ball in the final third for one of the first times today, but is dispossessed here by Joelinton outside the top of the penalty area. The young Barcelona star has been feeding on scraps today, picking up possession far too distant from the opponent's danger area to do much chance creation.
2nd half kickoff: The teams are back on the pitch and ready to play out the final 45 minutes of this first leg! The whole matchup feels like it's up for grabs...
HALFTIME: Newcastle 0-0 Barcelona
45 minutes have come and gone at St. James' Park, with plenty of spice and some attacking intent, but very little end product to show for all the hard work so far. Neither side has had a true goal scoring opportunity, with only three shots on target to this point plus a few other moments cut down by the offside flag.
It's been a good showing from Newcastle, who have probably been the better side so far by a slim margin, but given their recent form, there's a sense of inevitability about this matchup unless they can secure a bona fide lead on the scoresheet to put some true pressure on Barcelona.
40th min: The referee has been very lenient with both teams tonight, bypassing multiple chances to show yellow cards to players who have fouled opponents in an effort to stop a transitional opportunity. Lamine Yamal becomes the latest to get away with a potential booking after shoving Lewis Hall to the ground out wide on the touchline.
Only Sandro Tonali has been shown a caution thus far in what has become a physical tussle.
23rd min: Newcastle controlled the first 15 minutes of the game, pummeling the Barcelona structure with pressure and intent. Unfortunately for the hosts, they failed to score, with their best chance stymied by both a sensational Joan Garcia save and the offside flag.
Barcelona have gained more control in the last few minutes, with Pedri looking quality in midfield as always. This game hangs very much in the balance.
Kickoff: They're under way on Tyneside! Can Newcastle find their European form again, or will their domestic struggles bleed through and allow Barcelona to take an early first-leg lead?

Lineups: The starting XI for both sides has been released! For Barcelona, Gerard Martin continues to deputise at centre-back with a number of defenders injured, with Ronald Araujo a surprise pick to start out on the right instead of Eric Garcia who takes a seat on the bench.
For Newcastle, there's a surprise up front as William Osula gets the start at striker, with Anthony Gordon absent from the XI as reports indicate he has been ill the past few days, although he does appear on the bench. Dan Burn returns to the lineup at the back, with Sven Botman rotated out.
Alongside Gordon amongst the substitutes is Nick Woltemade, who remains without a goal in any competition since January 10, now on eight Champions League matches without finding the back of the net.
Prematch: Welcome to coverage of the Champions League first leg match between Newcastle and Barcelona!
Lamine Yamal has thrown Barcelona fans into a frenzy when he posted on Instagram ahead of today's match, "the time has come." The generational wonderkid could be on a warpath for the Ballon d'Or this year, if he can lead Barcelona to a Champions League title and pair it with a World Cup title later in the summer with Spain. Could that journey be starting in earnest today?
