The Saints have traded one of their starting specialists for a better draft pick

A day after signing Ryan Wright to handle their punting duties, the New Orleans Saints made a trade from their surplus on Tuesday.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Saints dealt last year’s starting punter, Kai Kroeger, to the Houston Texans for a pick swap in a future NFL draft. The Saints sent their seventh-round pick in 2028 for the Texans’ sixth-rounder the same year.

Kroeger started all 17 games in 2025 for the Saints as a rookie out of South Carolina, averaging 44.8 yards per punt (30th in the NFL) and 37.3 net yards per punt (31st). He also tied for the league-high with two punts blocked.

Wright, on the other hand, was eighth at 49.0 yards per punt for the Minnesota Vikings and fourth at 44.5 net yards per punt. The Saints and Wright agreed to a four-year $14 million deal Monday, the first day of the free agency negotiation period. The deal can become official when the league year starts Wednesday.
