Here's how the players rated:
Newcastle (4-3-3):
7 Ramsdale: Barcelona only had one shot on target before the equaliser. Good with his feet.
7 Trippier: A couple of nervy moments but on the whole assured and solid. Safety net for Elanga in front.
7 Thiaw: Brilliant for 94 minutes before momentary lapse allowed Barcelona chance to equalise.
8 Burn: Dominant defensive display. Didn’t give Lewandowski much of a kick. Newcastle will need a repeat next week.
9 Hall: As Howe said afterwards, Hall was outstanding. Contained and frustrated Yamal. His best display in a Newcastle shirt and the best player on the pitch. There can't be many better left-backs in world football.
8 Tonali: Set the tone for Newcastle in midfield. Helped to win the battle the Magpies lost when the sides met in September.
8 Joelinton: Intensity and physicality crucial for the Magpies. Was serenaded from the stands in the second half.
8 Ramsey: Another top quality display from the summer signing, who has been one of Newcastle’s best players in recent weeks and rose to the occasion.
7 Elanga: Terrified Barcelona with his pace and got into promising positions again and again. Final product let him down at times but will be crucial player in next week’s second leg.
6 Barnes: Worked hard in the first half and was a threat in the second. Hit the post and then scored the opener.
6 Osula: Worked extremely hard and occupied the Barcelona defenders but missed a couple of big chances.
Substitutes:
7 Murphy (for Elanga, 67): Delivery from the right created opener for Barnes.
6 Gordon (for Osula, 67): Conceded possession that led to Barcelona penalty.
6 Livramento (for Trippier, 67): Real boost to have the England international break.
Willock (for Barnes, 91): N/A
Subs not used: Pope, Ruddy, Harris, Botman, Wissa, Woltemade, A.Murphy, Neave
Man of the Match: Hall. What a performance. Yamal won’t relish facing the left-back again next week.
