A moment of madness from Malick Thiaw ruined what would have been a magical night for Newcastle United at St James' Park. Harvey Barnes' late strike looked to have secured a famous win for Eddie Howe's men over Barcelona.

But Thiaw's decision to trip Dani Olmo with the last act of the game allowed Lamine Yamal to equalise from the penalty spot - and Barca to escape back to Spain with a draw they didn't deserve.

Howe had urged his players to seize a once-in-a-lifetime chance to write themselves into club folklore. Just like Tino Asprilla did almost three decades ago, when his stunning hat-trick sank the Spanish giants on a famous night on Tyneside.

Howe had billed this as the biggest game in the club's history. And it felt like it before kick-off. Barca brought the quality and class, but Newcastle brought a cacophony of noise loud enough to send ripples across the Tyne.

As did Howe's decision to leave Anthony Gordon out of his starting line-up, although the winger was understood to be feeling under the weather. His 10 goals in the competition this season had had a major role in getting Newcastle this far.

And time would tell if the hosts would miss his prowess in front of goal. Fireworks lit up the night sky before kick-off. And Newcastle looked to produce some on the pitch, with a fast and furious start.

Howe's upped up stars ripped into Barca in the opening 15 minutes. Joan Garcia flew out to punch clear a cross from Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey threatened to run straight through the whole Barca team and Dan Burn blew a golden chance to score after Garcia had flapped at Sandro Tonali's stooping header.

Lewis Hall then sent William Osula clean through, but he hesitated at the crucial moment and allowed Barca to recover. The visitors looked rattled.

The closest Barca came to troubling Aaron Ramsdale was when Dan Burn almost diverted a cross into his goal. Yamal shot into the side netting, while at the opposite end William Osula rose to meet Elanga's cross, but saw his header drop onto the roof of the net.

Osula then just failed to reach another great ball in from Elanga. But Barca were building pressure, and Fermin Lopez should have done better with a chance inside the box, but all he could do was shoot straight at Ramsdale.

The game felt like it was on a knife edge. And Howe knew his side had to somehow find a breakthrough, in a bid to take some kind of advantage back to Barcelona next week.

But Elanga sliced an effort horribly wide, before Hall sent Osula into a good position on the left, but with just Garcia to beat, he blazed his effort into the Gallowgate End. Moments later Elanga tore past Joao Cancelo down the right, but his centre failed to find Osula, and Garcia came out to smother the danger.

Newcastle's momentum was starting to build - but so was their frustration. Because it felt like Barca were there for the taking. Hansi Flick's men were content to soak up pressure and hit Newcastle on the break, but their counter attacks came to nothing.
