Bad news hit the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday, March 10, ahead of their home game against the Memphis Grizzlies.

While the Sixers initially put a two-game timeline in place for the injured Tyrese Maxey, the organization made it clear that the veteran guard needed additional testing. Therefore, Maxey wasn’t guaranteed to return after the two-game absence.

Unfortunately, the Sixers didn’t get a positive update. According to an official statement from the team, Maxey’s follow-up appointments are going to call for a three-week absence at a minimum.

As expected, Sixers fans are crushed.

Philadelphia 76ers Fans React To The Tyrese Maxey Update

Getty76ers guard Tyrese Maxey has been hit with an unfortunate injury update.

@RBPhillyTake: Chalk the season up. It’s over.

@Harrison_Grimm: Brutal, and depending on how long he misses beyond that timeline it might cost him All-NBA. Cannot believe how bad the wheels fell off for this team.

@Sixerdaily: Situations like this are exactly why you demand your first-round pick back from OKC…

The Sixers entered the 2025-2026 NBA season with high hopes for their backcourt. Maxey was gearing up for a second All-Star run. Quentin Grimes showed a ton of promise during his short stretch with the Sixers. VJ Edgecombe was a promising rookie, who was coming in as a motivated third-overall pick.

Then, there was Jared McCain, who looked like the NBA’s top rookie of the 2024 class before going down with a season-ending injury in the middle of December. Fast forward to March 10, and it all looks different for Philly. It all looks worse.

@KevinNegandhi: Welp… just get right Tyrese. You can only do so much.

@AidanDoc__: The domino effect of the Jared McCain trade is ridiculous.

@CogginTobbogan: Man I wish the 76ers had another young guard who could shoot! But where would they have found someone like that?!

@philfanacc: they season over asf damn.

The Sixers Take A Major Hit

After what Tyrese Maxey considered an off year for himself in 2024-2025, the veteran guard was back to looking like a superstar version of himself. He was named an NBA All-Star for the second time in his career. And as Maxey was statistically producing like one of the top scorers in the league, he was getting All-NBA hype.

Now, his expected absence will affect his reality. And the Sixers are taking a massive hit as a team during a rough stretch.

Beyond the backcourt, Paul George is out for the team through late March. He was hit with an unexpected 25-game suspension from the NBA. Joel Embiid has dealt with knee, shin, and oblique concerns. His timeline for a return is unclear at the moment.

Jared McCain was shockingly cut loose back in February. As the Sixers navigated through the 2026 trade deadline, they shipped McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder for draft picks. The Sixers didn’t make a follow-up move, leaving them to eventually sign the veteran guard, Cam Payne, for a second stint with the team.

VJ Edecombe returns from a short-term absence as the Sixers’ primary ball handler for the time being. The rookie is tasked with leading a 34-30 team in the absence of key stars. Heading into Tuesday’s action against the Memphis Grizzlies, the Sixers are eighth in the Eastern Conference.

The Sixers still have a shot at the playoffs, but the Maxey setback is severely damaging expectations.
