Depot After Dark: Snell’s Great-Uncle Passes, Brian Thomas Jr. Trade Unlikely, Kuntz…

A Steelers Depot daily segment. A quick hit of some Pittsburgh Steelers-related stories that may not require a complete article, but nuggets worth mentioning and passing on to you guys.

Your Depot After Dark for March 10.

SNELL’S GREAT-UNCLE PASSES

Running back Benny Snell was a 2019 fourth-round pick by the Steelers. While he didn’t do much in his four seasons there, running for 982 total yards, he still started five games. Snell also followed the Steelers’ trend of adding players with NFL bloodlines. His great-uncle, Matt Snell, played for the New York Jets from 1964 to 1972.

The elder Snell was a legend, a key part of the Jets’ lone Super Bowl win who scored that game’s only touchdown. Unfortunately, he passed away recently at 84 years old, as ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported on Twitter. It’s sad, and hopefully, Benny Snell and the rest of his family see all the love being shown to the elder Snell.

Sad news: Matt Snell, Jets legend and Super Bowl III hero, has passed away, his son, Beau Snell, told ESPN. Snell, 84, died this morning on Long Island. He was a Jets Ring of Honor member and scored the only TD in Super Bowl III. He was dominant that day, rushing for 121 yards.…

BRIAN THOMAS JR. TRADE UNLIKELY

The Steelers surprised many by reportedly trading for wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. from the Indianapolis Colts. It’s similar to their deal for DK Metcalf, although Pittman didn’t cost nearly as much to acquire. While Pittman gives the Steelers an upgrade at wideout, they could still use another pass catcher.

Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Brian Thomas Jr. has been floated out as a potential trade candidate for the Steelers, but Adam Schefter recently provided an update that makes that seem unlikely. Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, Schefter stated that the Jaguars aren’t interested in trading Thomas. That doesn’t totally rule out a trade, but it sounds like acquiring Thomas is a long shot.

KUNTZ INTERVIEWING PITTSBURGH LEGENDS

Pittsburgh is receiving a lot of buzz in the NFL world this year. While the Steelers still don’t look like Super Bowl contenders, Pittsburgh is hosting the NFL draft, one of the league’s biggest events. Steelers long snapper Christian Kuntz is helping to build excitement for the event, too.

Steelers writer Teresa Varley shared on Twitter that Kuntz will be featuring Western Pennsylvania football legends on episodes of his podcast leading up to the draft. There have been plenty of great football players from the area, and not all of them have been Steelers. It should be a fun way to get to know some of the area’s greatest players.
