Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra Defends Bam Adebayo Decision for Scoring Record

Bam Adebayo achieved a record-breaking night in the NBA with an 83-point outburst against the Washington Wizards, surpassing multiple franchise records in the process.

Those records belonged to current NBA superstar LeBron James, who formerly played for the Miami Heat. King James had 25 points for the most in a quarter for the Heat, until Bam’s 31 in the first on Tuesday night. LeBron’s 61 points were his highest-scoring game with the franchise, but that record has now been surpassed.

Bam also became part of an elite group in NBA history. His 83 points are the second-most points ever scored in an NBA game, surpassing the previous second-best mark of 81 points, held by the late, great Kobe Bryant, who achieved that against the Toronto Raptors.

Only Wilt Chamberlain scored more points in a game with 100 points, a mark that could stand the test of time, depending on how games go in the future.

Bam played 42 minutes of the 48-minute game, hitting 20-of-43 field goals and 36-of-43 free throws before his epic night finished.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra was among those expressing extreme joy on Bam’s record-setting Tuesday night, as he applauded his big man’s performance and hugged him once he was off the court.

However, the head coach’s decision to keep Bam in the game as long as he did came under fire because the Heat were leading by a considerable margin in the fourth quarter.

In most of those game situations, a coach would sit his starters in the fourth quarter, when it is a blowout or very close to one.

Spoelstra addressed the media in postgame remarks about his decision to leave Bam in during after a “monster” performance earlier in the game.

"Tonight in that last six minutes of the third quarter and the entire fourth quarter, I felt like a fan," Spoelstra told reporters.

"I wanted to make sure I did my job to you know help if we could, but this one just came out of nowhere," he said of Bam's night, adding, "This one snuck up on us."

Spoelstra admitted he didn’t really think Bam’s night would be historic until he approached 70 points, and then “you talk about what Kobe got, and it was only 12, 14 points away at that point.”

“I didn’t want to get in the way of the moment,” he said, adding, “I damn for sure was not gonna take him out. Only thing I wanted to do for sure is at some point was get him out so he could enjoy this historic moment with fans and we could create a little bit of buzz for this last six weeks.”

Bam didn’t leave the game until there was 1:08 remaining in the fourth quarter, with bench player Vladislav Goldin coming in to replace him as the Heat star soaked up the moment with teammates and fans.

Ultimately, the Heat won the game 150-129 for one impressive scoring night from multi-time All-Star Bam Adebayo, who now joins a short list of elite players to have scored 80 points or more in a game.
