The Atlanta Falcons have made some significant noise during the early part of free agency so far. They’ve agreed to terms with eight new players who are set to sign on March 11.

For starters, Atlanta went out and agreed to terms with former Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. He’ll now be competing for the starting position with Michael Penix Jr., who is coming off suffering a torn ACL late last season.

Perhaps the other notable addition was that of former Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jahan Dotson, who agreed to a two-year, $15 million deal with Atlanta.

Seeing as how the Falcons receiver room had been depleted with the release of Darnell Mooney and Khadarel Hodge, Dotson was a necessary get.

“One thing notably missing from the Falcons wide receiver room in 2025 was someone who could stretch defenses with speed. Dotson could fill that role next season with his 4.43-second 40-yard dash motor,” ESPN’s Marc Raimondi wrote.

But ESPN’s Bill Barnwell has put into question the amount of receiver spending thus far in free agency, with Dotson’s name being included.

Bill Barnwell Questions Falcons’ Jahan Dotson Signing

Barnwell pointed specifically to Dotson when discussing early free agency deals that could come with risk for teams handing them out.

“We’ve already seen a handful of those deals handed out on the first day of free agency, and I’d be nervous about how they’ll play out for the teams involved,” Barnwell wrote. “The Falcons inked Jahan Dotson, who wasn’t able to command consistent targets as the third wideout in Philadelphia, to a two-year pact for $15 million.”

Barnwell’s concern centers around Dotson’s role the last two season’s with the Eagles. While he flashed promise earlier in his career with Washington, his production dipped after arriving in Philadelphia, where he struggled to become a consistent part of the offense.

In two seasons, Dotson logged just 37 receptions, 478 yards and one touchdown in 34 games.

That lack of involvement is part of why Barnwell believes deals like Dotson’s could carry some uncertainty for teams hoping to unlock more production.

Falcons Hoping Larger Role Unlocks Jahan Dotson

Atlanta, however, isn’t asking Dotson to be a depth receiver.

The Falcons needed immediate help at wide receiver after releasing Mooney and Hodge, leaving Drake London as the only proven option in the room. Dotson gives the offense another capable pass catcher who can stretch the field and potentially slide into the WR2 role.

During his first two seasons in Washington, Dotson showed flashes of that ability, totaling 1,041 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. His speed and ability to get behind defenses were traits that made him attractive to Atlanta during free agency.

The Falcons are clearly betting that a larger opportunity — and a fresh start — will allow Dotson to rediscover that form.

Whether Barnwell’s skepticism proves correct will ultimately depend on how quickly Dotson can establish himself in Atlanta’s offense. But given how thin the Falcons receiver room had become, the team clearly felt the risk was worth taking.
