Chelsea are said to be courting a Premier League star as Liam Rosenior considers an upgrade.
Chelsea are said to be considering a Premier League star as they consider upgrading a position that Liam Rosenior may deem insufficient. The Blues have made moderate progress under Rosenior, looking marginally better than they did under Enzo Maresca, though they have still struggled against some of the better sides.
The Blues still don’t look overly consistent, but they do remain a work in progress, especially given Rosenior came in during the season and was not given any chance to add new signings in the January transfer window.
Just how much say Rosenior will get on new signings this summer remains to be seen, with Maresca having had very little sway. Although, Rosenior is in an advantageous position, and he likely negotiated some say in transfers when he took the job.
The question then becomes which position Chelsea want to strengthen, which translates to which position Rosenior feels is currently too weak.
One of the positions that still has question marks is goalkeeper, with Robert Sanchez still not fully convincing many. The Spaniard has had a decent last calendar year after doubts in the first half of last season.
But he is still capable of inconsistent performances, and there have been links aplenty with new keepers. The latest sees Sunderland stopper Robin Roefs linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.
Caught Offside have reported that Chelsea are ‘very keen’ on Roefs having seen what he can do in the Premier League, helping the Black Cats to a very impressive first season back in the top flight.
Roefs is currently seventh in the clean sheet table with eight clean sheets, managing to protect his net in 28.6% of his games. For reference, Sanchez is third with 10 clean sheets and a 37% percentage, but you would also argue that Chelsea’s defence is better than that of Sunderland’s, and it is.
Sunderland reportedly have a £50million asking price for Roefs, who is 23 years of age and under contract until 2030. That would be a big statement from Chelsea, and it would make it clear that the goalkeeping department is the biggest area of need. Rosenior will have to make that decision this summer.
