On this day, the Old Trafford stadium, home to Manchester United, suffered significant damage due to bombing during the Second World War. The industrial complex of Trafford Park was a primary target for German bombers, but some bombs missed their mark, hitting the stadium instead. The destruction was so extensive that Manchester United could not host any football matches at Old Trafford for the remainder of the war. In 1945, the War Damage Commission allocated £4,800 to clear the debris and an additional £17,478 for rebuilding the stands. Despite these efforts, Manchester United did not play a home Football League match at Old Trafford until 24th August 1949, against Bolton Wanderers. The last league match at the stadium before the war had been against Grimsby Town on 26th August 1939. Furthermore, the club did not host a home match under floodlights until 25th March 1957, once again against Bolton, necessitating the use of Manchester City’s Maine Road for earlier floodlit European Cup matches in the 1956/57 season.

The 2016/17 FA Cup season was notable for the achievements of non-league clubs, with Lincoln City and Sutton United both reaching the 5th Round, a feat unprecedented since the formation of the Football League in 1888. Lincoln City, a Conference side, advanced further to the 6th Round, becoming the first non-league team to reach the quarter-finals since QPR, then in the Southern League, did so in the 1913/14 season. Lincoln’s journey to the quarter-finals included victories over Oldham, Ipswich, Brighton, and Burnley. On 11th March 2017, they faced Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, where they were defeated 5-0. Despite the loss, the financial gains from their cup run provided a substantial boost, aiding their return to the Football League in the 2017/18 season.
