Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has spoken about Arsenal following Bayern Munich’s thumping 6-1 win over Atalanta in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16.
The German champions cruised to a comfortable victory over the Serie A outfit on the road last night. They are pretty much guaranteed their spot in the quarter-final and could face one of Manchester City or Real Madrid.
Speaking after the 6-1 rout, Schmeichel said that it looks like Arsenal and Bayern will meet in the Champions League final in Hungary, and believes the latter could be difficult to beat if they keep playing as they are.
He told CBS Sports Golazo: “The way the draw happened, it kind of looks like, the number one team in the group phase Arsenal will be playing the number two team, Bayern Munich in the final. Still a long way to go, but kind of looks like that. And if Bayern keeps playing like that, I can’t see any team beating them.”
Arsenal face Bayer Leverkusen on the road in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 tonight.
The Bundesliga outfit are not an easy opposition to face at the BayArena. They have won seven of their 12 league matches this campaign. Hence, the Gunners must be at their best to come on top.
If Mikel Arteta’s side were to progress, they could face either Bodo/Glimt or Sporting CP in the last eight stage. The Gunners could face a potential semi-final against Barcelona or Atletico Madrid.
Hence, there is a long way to go for Arsenal and Bayern to meet again. Bayern have an equally tough hurdle. They will take on Man City or Madrid in the quarter-final stage of the competition.
Progressing further could see them meet Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool or even Galatasaray in the last four. Whoever reaches the final will have truly deserved his spot, in our opinion.
Arsenal beat Bayern by a comfortable 3-1 scoreline at the Emirates Stadium in the league phase, but the neutral venue in Budapest cancels out any advantage for the teams if they make the final.
