The Denver Broncos aren’t splashing around frivolously with their money on overpriced free agents. They also aren’t signing new contracts before a big trade involving a huge chunk of their cap space gets finalized.
I think it is worth taking a moment to appreciate that Sean Payton has steered the ship towards sanity and out of this team, making decisions fit for a clown fiesta in downtown Oakland.
Yes, yes, I know the Raiders are now in Las Vegas, but that franchise isn’t able to shake off the jank of their No-Cal roots.
Their going on a free agent spending spree before their trade of Maxx Crosby was finalized was like a visit of the Ghost of Al Davis past.
For our team, the front office seems to be taking a far more sensible approach:
1. Don’t overspend on early free agency
2. Don’t let good culture players leave
3. Try to sign an impact player, but don’t get into bidding wars
The Broncos are very likely to add some free agents still. Those free agents are all going to be on fair contracts that don’t handicap the Broncos in the future.
Four years ago, this team didn’t even have a culture to try to keep.
