Opinion: Jesse Marsch's past verdict on Everton target Crysensio Summerville may concern David…

Everton have been linked with Crysencio Summerville, but Jesse Marsch’s past comments about his discipline should see the club think twice about any move.

It will be a big summer for Everton, in what will be The Friedkin Group’s second major window since taking over.

Would you be happy with this potential transfer Toffees fans? 🤔

Potentially, Everton could be playing in Europe next season, and if that’s the case then it will be even more important to get the recruitment right.

Summerville has been linked with a move to Everton, although a number of other clubs are said to be keen.

One would imagine that West Ham United getting relegated would make his exit much more likely.

But some past comments from Jesse Marsch about the player are a slight cause for concern.

Summerville is a real talent, of that there is no question.

The winger has scored seven goals and supplied four assists so far this season, and has been particularly impactful in 2026.

But a feature piece from the Daily Mail last month shared an interesting quote from former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch, who worked with the Dutchman at Elland Road.

The article references how Dirk Kuyt, who worked with him in the Feyenoord academy, ‘castigated the young Summerville for turning up late to training and not always giving his all’.

It then says ‘it was never his football that was going to be the issue, before Jesse Marsch is quoted as saying: “‘A big factor for him is discipline, professionalism and work ethic.”

Marsch later went on to brand Summerville in February 2024 one of the worst trainers, saying (via YEP: “There’s a lot. There’s a lot of them

“In New York [Red Bulls], it was Kemar Lawrence, in Leeds, Crysencio Summerville. Ademola Lookman, maybe, in Leipzig. You have to kind of understand your players, but you also have to push them. You have to say, ‘you have to train right’. It’s less to do with earning my respect and more to do with earning your teammates’ respect.”

Summerville improving

While this is something that Everton will need to carefully consider, it is worth pointing out that Summerville has had time to develop since.

Nuno Espirito Santo encouragingly said earlier this year: “He’s been doing well, amazing, helping the team, not only with his goals and assists, but always also with his defensive work. I don’t see a ceiling.”

Ultimately he’s now a bit more mature and will be fully aware of the need to give nothing short of 100%, both in training and in games.

David Moyes would certainly not stand for anything less.

It will be interesting to see if Everton do make a push for Summerville this summer.
