Newcastle United latest news: Bruno Guimaraes has reacted to Newcastle United’s draw with Barcelona on Instagram.
Guimaraes hasn’t featured for the Magpies since being injured at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last month and is around four weeks away from a return to the team. He will, therefore, be unable to help his teammates in their task of overcoming Barcelona at the Camp Nou next week.
In his absence, the Magpies will head to Spain level with Barcelona after Lamine Yamal’s late penalty denied them a famous win on Tyneside. The hosts had led through Harvey Barnes’ 86th minute striker after the former Leicester City man turned home from close range following a searching cross by Jacob Murphy.
That goal sent not only St James’ Park wild, but also the Guimaraes household. Taking to Instagram, Guimaraes posted a video of the goal with the caption: ‘What a cross @jacobmurphy95 and he is the guy @harveybarnes97 vamooooos 🖤🤍🙏🙏’
Later, after the full-time whistle and the dramatic end to proceedings at St James’ Park, he added: ‘Tremendous effort from the boys couldn’t ask for more! Very unlucky in the end. We go again next week 🖤🤍’.
Harvey Barnes reacts to Newcastle United v Barcelona Champions League draw
Barnes was one of seven players to retain their place in Eddie Howe’s starting XI on Tuesday night, beginning the game on the left of a front-three alongside Will Osula and Anthony Elanga. That trio was largely tasked with breaking Barcelona’s high line and whilst it took almost the full match for that tactic to pay dividends, they did give their opposition a difficult evening and will undoubtedly be a weapon for them to exploit at the Camp Nou next week.
Yamal’s late penalty has left a bitter taste on the 93 minutes that preceded it, but that shouldn’t take away from what was a brilliant performance by those in black-and-white and Barnes, the man who thought he’d leave St James’ Park as the matchwinner, admitted those last few minutes left a ‘strange feeling’’
“It is a bit of a strange feeling, we are only halfway through the tie, we played really well tonight, kept their dangerous players quiet,” Barnes told Amazon Prime. “We got ahead with a good goal but the way it ended, it is a tough one to take but we have to remember it is only halfway through the tie.
“We played really well in the game. We were on top for a lot of it.
“It will be a different sort of game at their place, but we know what we can do and we know when we are at our level how well we can play. What a feeling it would have been to go there 1-0 up but we are level in the tie and all to play for.
“It is one game, away from home, where we can show what we can do. It will be an exciting game for us.”
