The Kansas City Chiefs have reunited with another wide receiver in the latest NFL free agency news, as player agency Equity Sports announced that their client Nikko Remigio has agreed to terms on a contract extension with KC.
Equity Sports revealed the Remigio news on the evening of March 10, just about 24 hours after the Chiefs agreed to re-sign fellow wide receiver Tyquan Thornton.
Of course, Remigio is more of a primary returner than he is a major contributor at wide receiver. However, the two early moves still set up quarterback Patrick Mahomes with even more familiarity after the return of superstar tight end Travis Kelce.
Nikko Remigio Will Once Again Compete for Chiefs’ Lead Returner Role in 2026 After Extension News

Remigio was an exclusive-rights free agent, so his return was more of a question of whether the Chiefs wanted him back. With the free agent market officially opening on March 11, following two days of legal tampering, Kansas City decided to move forward with the former UDFA success story on March 10.
The news secures Remigio’s place on the Chiefs’ 90-man roster heading into Organized Team Activities and camp season, assuming they don’t choose to release him at a later date.
The expectation is that Remigio will once again compete for the lead returner role in 2026. But there’s no guarantee he wins the job.
Remigio has had mixed results over the past couple of years. He generally impresses during the preseason but struggles to live up to that track record once the regular season begins.
In the summer of 2024, Remigio averaged 33.25 yards per return on kickoffs and 21.0 yards per return on punts, according to Football Database. Those averages then crashed back down to earth during the 2024 campaign, with 26.82 yards per kick return and 9.45 yards per punt.
Remigio’s return stats followed a similar trend in 2025.
In the preseason, Remigio returned two kickoffs for an average of 38.5 yards per return. He was far less explosive over 29 regular season kickoffs, with an average of 25.55 yards per return despite a 47-yard long.
The undrafted prospect’s punt return average also sank to 7.64 yards per return in 2025.
Chiefs Must Continue to Add at Wide Receiver in NFL Free Agency
At the end of the day, Remigio hasn’t been a bad returner, but he hasn’t been special either. And when you’re on the 53-man roster because you are a return specialist, you have to stand out.
Otherwise, an NFL team will eventually figure out a reason to cut you loose so that they can utilize the roster spot on another position.
The Chiefs have kept anywhere from five to seven wide receivers in recent years, and Remigio cannot be handed a spot based on familiarity. Kansas City’s WR corps was a weak area in 2025, and it’s on general manager Brett Veach to bring in more talent at wide receiver.
Along with Thornton and Remigio, recent draft picks Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Jalen Royals are all under contract. Meanwhile, veterans Hollywood Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster are currently unrestricted free agents.
It would behoove the Chiefs to move on from either Brown or Smith-Schuster, or both.
KC cannot just run it back with the same WR corps in 2026. They must either sign or draft another starting-caliber playmaker who is an upgrade on players like Thornton, Remigio, Brown, and Smith-Schuster.
