Bam Adebayo of the Miami Heat celebrates during the fourth quarter of the game against the Washington Wizards.

The debate surrounding Bam Adebayo’s historic 83-point game has divided the basketball world — but Giannis Antetokounmpo made it clear where he stands.

The Milwaukee Bucks superstar publicly defended Adebayo after criticism surfaced following the Miami Heat center’s stunning performance against the Washington Wizards.

“Incredible. Incredible,” Antetokounmpo said when asked about Adebayo’s historic night. “Speaks volumes about his hard work. I haven’t seen the game. I have to watch the game and see.

“It doesn’t matter how you get it. All that means is that you got it.”

Bam Adebayo’s 83-Point Game Enters NBA Record Books

Adebayo’s performance came during Miami’s 150–129 victory over Washington, instantly becoming one of the most remarkable individual scoring games in league history.

The All-Star center finished with 83 points on 20-of-43 shooting, while also setting two NBA records at the free-throw line. Adebayo converted 36 free throws on 43 attempts, breaking the previous single-game marks for both makes and attempts.

He also knocked down seven three-pointers on 22 attempts, an unusual perimeter-heavy performance for a traditional center.

Only the legendary Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point performance in 1962 stands above Adebayo’s scoring total.

The Heat star also surpassed Kobe Bryant’s iconic 81-point performance, which Bryant produced for the Los Angeles Lakers against the Toronto Raptors on Jan. 22, 2006.

Bryant scored his 81 points by shooting 28-of-46 from the field (60.9%), including 7-of-13 from three-point range, and 18-of-20 from the free-throw line in 42 minutes.

Adebayo’s night also shattered several other statistical benchmarks.

His 43 free-throw attempts broke the previous record of 39, which had been set twice by former All-Star center Dwight Howard.

The previous record for free throws made in a game (28) was shared by Chamberlain and Hall of Famer Adrian Dantley — a mark Adebayo surpassed comfortably.

Despite his massive scoring total, Adebayo nearly recorded a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Says History Won’t Remember the Details

While the performance generated widespread debate, Antetokounmpo argued that the specifics of how Adebayo reached 83 points would ultimately fade.

“In 10, 20, 30 years from now, nobody’s going to remember how many free throws he shot,” Antetokounmpo said. “I don’t think I remember how many shots Kobe shot, or how many free throws he made, or threes.

“All you remember is 81, 100. You don’t remember that.”

For Antetokounmpo, the most important takeaway was that Adebayo’s scoring helped Miami secure the victory.

“At the end of the day, he got 83 points,” Antetokounmpo said. “And obviously — did they win?

“Great way to help your team win a game.”

The two-time MVP also praised Adebayo’s dedication.

“I know Bam. He works his butt off every single day. He never cheats the game,” Antetokounmpo said. “Seeing a guy like him doing something like this is incredible.”

NBA Reaction to Bam Adebayo’s Historic Night Divides Fans

Despite Antetokounmpo’s support, the performance sparked widespread controversy.

Some observers questioned the number of late-game free throws and possessions that allowed Adebayo to continue piling up points.

Fantasy basketball pioneer Rick Kamla suggested the performance deserved an asterisk.

“Congrats to Bam on 83!! 👏👏 But it requires an asterisk**************,” Kamla wrote.

Sports medicine analyst Dr. Brian Sutterer was even more direct.

“This is a disgrace to Kobe’s 81,” he wrote on social media.

Veteran NBA analyst Frank Isola also voiced skepticism.

“That’s Heat Culture?” Isola wrote.

The debate even spilled into arenas. Before a Lakers game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the public-address announcer informed the crowd that Adebayo had surpassed Bryant’s 81-point mark.

“A rather melancholy footnote in NBA history occurred,” the announcer said. “Miami Heat–Washington 150–129. In that game, Miami forward Bam Adebayo scored 83 points.”

The announcement drew loud boos from the Los Angeles crowd before the Lakers went on to win 120–106.

Debate Continues Over How Bam Adebayo Reached 83 Points

Much of the criticism focused on the late-game sequence that helped Adebayo chase the record.

Artist and designer Tyson Beck criticized the contrast between common NBA etiquette and the circumstances surrounding the record chase.

“It’s disrespectful, apparently, when someone in the NBA gets a late basket as time expires when the game is over,” Beck wrote. “But it’s not disrespectful that a team can extend a game up 27 to manufacture an extra dozen possessions by fouling and creating an extra 15 points for a player.”

The reaction from Lakers Nation reflected the divided sentiment among fans.

“Congrats to Bam, but we all know what we just watched,” the outlet wrote on X.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Focused on the Achievement

For Antetokounmpo, however, the controversy surrounding the record chase does little to diminish the accomplishment itself.

“I know that his family and his close friends are extremely excited and happy for him,” Antetokounmpo said.

“And again, it speaks volumes about his hard work.”

Whether the debate continues or not, Adebayo’s 83-point explosion has already secured its place alongside the most iconic scoring performances in NBA history — and Antetokounmpo made it clear he believes the achievement deserves recognition rather than scrutiny.
