Forget Micky van de Ven, Liverpool could snap up an even better Spurs star for just £26m - opinion

Liverpool continue to be linked with a move for Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven.

The Dutchman has been admired on Merseyside for many years, and the collapse of Spurs this season presents an opportunity to poach a superstar.

But Liverpool should have concerns with Van de Ven. His attitude, inconsistency, and rash moments don’t do much to encourage these links.

Is it time for Liverpool to move on from Ibrahima Konate?

Would you be too disappointed to see him leave this summer?

Add to that the outrageous price tag likely attached to any sale, and what you have is a questionable bit of business. Liverpool should instead look at his teammate, Djed Spence, who is being tipped for a summer exit.

Liverpool need to hijack Juventus interest in Djed Spence

There are many areas to address in the summer, and full-back is certainly one of them.

Andy Robertson looks set to leave Liverpool, and we saw the frailties exposed by injuries at right-back this season.

In steps Spence, the perfect signing to shore up both wings of the defence, and a player being mooted for a bargain £26 million move.

Gazzetta dello Sport claim Juventus are ‘on the trail’ of Spence. The English defender has developed into a quality talent in recent seasons, and with Spurs in freefall, he is probably rethinking the decision to renew his contract with them.

At this price point, it would be a fantastic acquisition, almost like signing two players in one. Spence has dropped off some compared to last season, but the same can be said for almost every player scrapping around the relegation zone in North London.

Milos Kerkez needs competition. We can’t have a 22-year-old as the only recognised left-back at Anfield.

Spence has experience in Serie A and a personal relationship with Juventus sporting director Marco Ottolini, but he might be swayed to stay in England if the conditions are right.

Van de Ven is a quality player, but one whose stock has been affected by his side’s struggles. Spence is part of the issue there, too, but his performances through the adversity have been markedly better.

Liverpool should get on this deal.
