On Tuesday night, much of the basketball world focused on Bam Adebayo’s historic 83-point performance for the Miami Heat. But in the G League, another explosive scoring night quietly unfolded courtesy of Mac McClung.

Representing the Chicago Bulls’ G League affiliate, the Windy City Bulls, McClung erupted for 54 points during a dramatic 127-126 overtime loss to the College Park Skyhawks.

The performance set a new career high for the 27-year-old and established a new single-game scoring record in Windy City franchise history.

It also ranks as the third-highest scoring performance in G League history, trailing only Jordan McRae’s 58 points in 2016 and Alondes Williams’ 55-point effort in 2024.

Mac McClung Delivers Historic Scoring Night for Windy City

McClung shot an efficient 18-of-34 from the field, knocking down 9-of-18 from three-point range while converting all five of his free throw attempts. Both his field goals and three-pointers made marked career highs.

He also added seven rebounds, 10 assists and one block, recording his seventh double-double of the season while narrowly missing a triple-double.

The three-time NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion set the tone early, pouring in 26 points and six three-pointers in the opening quarter alone as Windy City battled College Park in a thrilling contest that ultimately required overtime.

Through 33 games with Chicago’s affiliate this season, McClung is averaging a career-high 27.9 points per game along with 3.2 rebounds, 7.1 assists and 1.2 steals.

Across those appearances, he has shot an efficient 51.3% from the field and 37.1% from beyond the arc.

Despite earning a reputation as something of an NBA journeyman since entering the league undrafted in 2021, McClung is currently enjoying arguably the best stretch of basketball of his career.

He briefly secured a multi-year deal with the Indiana Pacers in late October, appearing in three games and averaging 6.3 points before being waived.

McClung later returned to the Bulls organization for a second stint with Windy City, having first played for the team during his rookie season in 2021-22.

His strong run of performances in the G League ultimately earned him a two-way contract on February 5.

McClung Continuing to Build Impressive G League Resume

With his 54-point performance on Tuesday, McClung is rapidly approaching the 1,000-point mark for the G League season.

He currently sits at 922 points, tied for the second-highest total in the league alongside Rio Grande Valley Vipers guard Daishen Nix.

Nix’s teammate, Houston Rockets two-way guard Tristen Newton, currently leads the league with 1,088 points, although he has played 10 more games and nearly 300 additional minutes than McClung.

Recently, McClung also became just the third player in G League history to reach 5,000 career points across the Tip-Off Tournament, regular season and playoffs.

He has topped the 30-point mark 14 times this season, with his previous season high being 42 points in a win over the Iowa Wolves in November.

In early January, McClung also delivered a standout all-around performance, recording 31 points and a career-high 17 assists against the Delaware Blue Coats.

Throughout his NBA stops with the Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic and Pacers, the 6-foot-2 guard has rarely been given the opportunity to play extended minutes or establish a consistent role.

This season, McClung has appeared in four NBA games, three with Indiana and one with Chicago, averaging 5.8 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 11.8 minutes per game.

Still, his continued dominance in the G League has kept his name firmly on the radar.

Across 207 career G League games since the 2021-22 season, McClung holds averages of 22.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.1 steals while shooting an impressive 49.4 percent from the field and 37.9 percent from three-point range.

As NBA teams increasingly prioritize bench scoring and secondary playmaking, Mac McClung’s offensive skillset remains relevant and increasingly difficult to overlook.
