Bam Adebayo of the Miami Heat drives to the basket against Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks.
The NBA’s latest historic performance will add an extra layer of intrigue when the Milwaukee Bucks face the Miami Heat on Thursday.
Right after Bam Adebayo erupted for a record-breaking 83 points against the Washington Wizards, Giannis Antetokounmpo had a lighthearted response when asked about trying to slow down the Heat star.
“We’ll try not for [Bam] to score 83,” Antetokounmpo said with a smile. “He’s going to score 82.”
After a brief pause and laughter from reporters, the two-time MVP clarified his joking point.
“So we do our best for him to score 82, not 83.”
The playful jab highlighted the mutual respect between the two All-Star big men as Milwaukee prepares to face Miami in what will be the first game for either team since Adebayo’s historic scoring outburst.
Bam Adebayo’s 83-Point Night Sends Shockwaves Across NBA
Adebayo’s performance instantly entered the NBA record books.
The Heat center poured in 83 points in Miami’s 150–129 victory, producing the second-highest single-game scoring total in NBA history.
Only the legendary 100-point performance by Wilt Chamberlain in 1962 stands above it.
The 27-year-old big man finished with 83 points on 20-of-43 shooting, while converting a record 36 free throws on 43 attempts.

Both numbers set new NBA single-game records.
His 43 free-throw attempts broke the previous mark of 39 held by former All-Star center Dwight Howard.
Meanwhile, the previous record for free throws made in a game — 28, shared by Chamberlain and Hall of Famer Adrian Dantley — was surpassed comfortably.
Adebayo also attempted 22 three-pointers, tying the third-most attempts in a single game in NBA history.
Despite the scoring explosion, he nearly recorded a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds along with three assists, two steals and two blocks.
Giannis Antetokounmpo Defends Bam Adebayo
Antetokounmpo has also publicly defended Adebayo amid the controversy surrounding the performance.
“Incredible. Incredible,” Antetokounmpo said when asked about the historic night.
“It doesn’t matter how you get it. All that means is that you got it.”
The Bucks superstar emphasized that historic scoring achievements are remembered for the final number — not the details behind how they were reached.
“In 10, 20, 30 years from now, nobody’s going to remember how many free throws he shot,” Antetokounmpo said.
“All you remember is 81, 100. You don’t remember that.”
For Antetokounmpo, the most important detail was that Adebayo’s performance helped Miami secure the win.
“At the end of the day, he got 83 points,” he said. “And obviously — did they win? Great way to help your team win a game.”
Shared Agent Connects Bam Adebayo, Giannis Antetokounmpo
The friendly tone between the two All-Star big men may also stem from an off-court connection.
Adebayo and Antetokounmpo are both represented by Alex Saratsis, a prominent agent at Octagon Basketball.
Saratsis has represented Antetokounmpo for years and played a key role in negotiating the Bucks star’s landmark contracts with Milwaukee.
The shared representation has helped foster a close relationship between the two players, who have developed mutual respect through All-Star appearances and international competition.
Bucks Prepare for Major Test Against Heat
Now the focus shifts back to the court.
Milwaukee will try to slow down Adebayo when the teams meet Thursday — a matchup that suddenly carries even more attention after the Heat center’s historic night.
Antetokounmpo’s joking prediction made it clear he understands the challenge.
Stopping a player fresh off an 83-point game might be easier said than done.
