The basketball world mostly had its focus on the Miami Heat star Bam Adebayo making NBA history, rightfully so.
But in the NBA G League, the slam dunk star Mac McClung was putting together a historical performance for his own resume. The high-flying guard notched 54 points to set a Windy City Bulls record.
via NBA G League on X: Mac McClung IS A PROBLEM. His 54 PTS set a new franchise record for the @windycitybulls . McClung also notched career highs with 18 FGM and 9 3PM.
The 27-year-old has been a dominant presence at the NBA’s developmental level for quite some time.
After starring at Texas Tech for the final season of his NCAA journey, McClung didn’t get drafted in 2021. He started his professional career with the Los Angeles Lakers’ NBA G League team.
The Bulls became the first team to give McClung an NBA deal. He signed a 10-day contract in December 2021. The deal extended to 20 days, before allowing it to expire without a second follow-up move.
After runs with the Lakers and Bulls G League teams, McClung worked under the Philadelphia 76ers for their affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats. He found plenty of success within the Sixers’ franchise.
Not only did McClung win the Slam Dunk contest for the first time as a member of the Sixers, but he earned his first two-way contract in the league with the team. McClung also won his first NBA G League title with the Blue Coats.
Since his Sixers days, McClung has had runs with the Orlando Magic and the Indiana Pacers before landing in his current situation with the Bulls.
While McClung still has a goal of making it to the top of pro basketball in the United States with a steady role, his G League accomplishments are nothing to overlook.
Outside of being a three-time Slam Dunk champion, McClung has an NBA G League MVP, two-time All-NBA G League First Team, and NBA G League scoring champ on his resume.
This season, McClung has 22 regular-season games under his belt with the Windy City Bulls. The veteran guard has been shooting 51% from the field to average 30.2 points per game. He’s nearly notching a double-double per game, with 7.5 assists on average.
Following his dominant 54-point showing, McClung is hoping to get more action at the main level soon. He has just one appearance with the Bulls this season, and three with the Pacers earlier in the year. He averaged 5.8 points in roughly 11 minutes of action.
