Taurean Prince defies expectations with Bucks return

Milwaukee Bucks forward Taurean Prince maintained throughout his recovery that he would return this season after undergoing neck surgery in November, even as head coach Doc Rivers expressed some doubt. Prince ultimately made his comeback in Milwaukee’s 129-114 defeat to the Phoenix Suns, appearing in a game for the first time since Nov. 4.

“It’s cool because, honestly, I didn’t think he’d play this year. The fact that he’s worked the way he’s worked to get back on the floor, it’s just all about him and who he is. It really is. It’s really a cool thing,” Doc Rivers remarked.

Prince had surgery in November to repair a herniated disc in his neck. He said he was not aware of anyone who had undergone the same procedure and managed to return during the same season. That reality only strengthened his determination to make it happen, even though he was told the goal would require a flawless rehabilitation process.

“I just always told myself that it would be this season,” said the Bucks forward. “I never thought it wouldn’t.”

Prince made 73 starts for the Bucks during the 2024 to 25 season, but he had appeared in eight games off the bench this year before the injury.

He also pointed out that he has gone through three surgeries over the past five years, which helped him approach this recovery with a clearer understanding of the process. Even while sidelined, Prince stayed engaged with the team and looked for ways to contribute wherever he could.

Prince still needs time to regain his rhythm as he works back into game shape. He played 18 minutes Tuesday and collected three rebounds, but failed to convert any of his four shot attempts and ended the night scoreless.

“I was mad about not seeing a 3 go down. Taking life day by day, it is what it is. I can’t worry about that starting tomorrow. Get to work, and I’ll get one to go down (Thursday) in Miami,” Prince added.
