Jets rumors reveal two positions New York is focused on in free agency

The official start of free agency begins on Wednesday and the New York Jets are reportedly focusing in on two positions specifically.

Of course, plenty of players have agreed to contracts with teams over the past few days, but none of those contracts can be made official until 4 p.m. ET on March 11.

When it comes to what the Jets are looking at in free agency on Wednesday, The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt reports that adding an offensive lineman and a backup quarterback are of particular interest.

"Things to watch for Jets today (FA officially opens at 4): - OL. Jets have been looking at various veteran options. Don’t expect them to break the bank but they’ll add at least one. They need multiple OL after losing Simpson/AVT plus backups Mitchell/Okorafor/Newman are all hitting free agency). [And] QB2," he wrote.

The offensive line is obviously the much more pressing need with all of the free-agent departures that included two starters in Alijah Vera-Tucker and John Simpson. New York needs one starter and some depth.

The Jets finally answered the question of who their starter will be after they traded for Geno Smith in a deal that included a pick swap with the Las Vegas Raiders.

It is a bit odd that adding a backup quarterback is this high on the list. Sure, Tyrod Taylor is a free agent and Justin Fields will likely be cut or traded, but New York also has Brady Cook under contract.

We know, we know, Cook isn't any great shakes, but for a team that has no future at the quarterback position, it would make sense to give him a look as the backup and maybe add another young signal-caller late in the draft.

On the flip side, head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey are probably interested in a veteran because if Smith gets hurt, the Jets are likely going to lose a ton of games with Cook or another inexperienced quarterback and another disastrous season like 2025 could put Mougey and Glenn on the hot seat.
