Eagles Could Pursue Pro Bowl Edge Rusher After Trey Hendrickson Spurn

The Philadelphia Eagles still have some edge rusher options they could pursue after missing on Trey Hendrickson.

The Philadelphia Eagles unexpectedly weren’t able to re-sign edge rusher Jaelan Phillips. That may have caused the Eagles to pursue Trey Hendrickson, an older and projected-to-be more expensive option.

As it turns out, Hendrickson wasn’t more expensive. But it was too little, too late for the Eagles.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Baltimore Ravens came to terms on a 4-year, $112 million contract with Hendrickson. The deal, as all are in the NFL, is dependent on Hendrickson passing a physical and will have to wait until 4 pm ET Wednesday to become official.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported five other teams, including the Eagles, were involved in Hendrickson talks.

Controversy surrounded the Ravens inking Hendrickson to a deal because it came about 12 hours after Baltimore cancelled a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders for fellow edge rusher Maxx Crosby. But it doesn’t sound like the Eagles finished second for Hendrickson either.

“The Colts, Bills, Bucs, Commanders and Eagles all were involved in Trey Hendrickson’s free agency before the All-Pro agreed to terms with the Ravens, per sources. The Colts felt like they were close at one point,” Fowler wrote on X. “The Eagles got involved late.

“Tampa pursued but on a short-term deal. Hendrickson wanted a long-term deal with a contender. Buffalo fit that mold. But Baltimore put it over the top Tuesday night.”

NJ.com’s Cayden Steele put it more plainly, writing Hendrickson “rejected” Philadelphia’s contract offer.

With Hendrickson off the market, Steele argued the Eagles could turn their attention to two other edge rushers — Pro Bowlers Jonathan Greenard and Bradley Chubb.

Eagles Pursuing Jonathan Greenard Trade?

Of the two edge rushers Steele sees the Eagles pursuing next, Greenard is the one available this week.

ESPN’s Kevin Seifert reported on March 3 the Minnesota Vikings are open to a Greenard trade. Initially, pundits saw the potential deal as a likely salary dump with the Vikings trying to get cap compliant for the new league year.

All teams have to be under the salary cap by 4 pm ET Wednesday.

But the Vikings have presented a front that they don’t have to trade Greenard. A deal could happen Wednesday or not.

Greenard’s market may be heating up too since the Hendrickson signing.

“Look for teams in need of pass rush help to turn their attention to a potential trade for Minnesota’s Jonathan Greenard, who multiple teams have inquired about, as well as other options on the free-agent market,” wrote NFL insider Dianna Russini on X.

Greenard made the Pro Bowl for the Vikings in 2024 behind 12 sacks, 18 tackles for loss and 22 quarterback hits. Last season, he experienced a disappointing year with three sacks, 10 tackles for loss and 12 quarterback hits.

The Vikings edge rusher also missed five games in 2025 because of a shoulder injury.

He doesn’t have the same pedigree as Hendrickson, but with the market narrowing, the Eagles could push harder for Greenard. However, other teams could do the same thing.

Could Bradley Chubb Be Released?

The other option Steele presented Wednesday was for the Eagles to remain patient for an edge rusher. With enough patience, Chubb could eventually be available.

“Philadelphia has also been connected to Dolphins pass rusher Bradley Chubb, who is expected to get released with a post-June 1 designation, given his familiarity with Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio from their together in Miami,” wrote Steele.

Chubb has dealt with a recent injury as well. He missed the entire 2024 campaign because of a torn ACL.

But he bounced back last season to post 8.5 sacks, eight tackles for loss and 20 quarterback hits in 17 games.

Again, Chubb doesn’t have Hendrickson’s upside. But he’s younger than the Ravens new edge rusher and has experienced similar success as Phillips.

The former Eagles edge rusher is younger. At least in the short term, though, Chubb could replace Phillips’s production from Philadelphia’s defense last season.

The Hendrickson rejection hurts the Eagles. But it might not for long. General manager Howie Roseman has other high-end options to consider.
